Hello BCPS Community,
It has been another busy and engaging fortnight in the Grade 3/4 learning space. Our students have been working hard across all areas of the curriculum and continue to demonstrate enthusiasm and curiosity in their learning.
Writing
In Writing, students have been developing their skills in researching and planning non-fiction texts. They have been exploring how to locate reliable information, take meaningful notes in their own words, and answer key questions about their chosen topics. A strong focus has been placed on understanding information rather than simply copying it, helping students become more thoughtful and independent researchers. We have been watching some BTN (Behind the news) episodes, taking time to note take important features and facts uncovered.
Students have then used their new research skills to finish publishing their own non-fiction pieces. They have been learning how to organise their ideas, group related information, and incorporate important non-fiction text features such as headings, diagrams and labels. It has been wonderful to see students take ownership of their learning as they plan creative ways to present their work.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been exploring money and financial literacy through an engaging “shoe design” project. They applied their understanding of addition, decimals and rounding while working within a set budget to design their own pair of shoes. This hands-on task supported students in making thoughtful financial decisions and calculating totals and change accurately.
Students then developed their designs further by creating persuasive blurbs to “sell” their shoes, combining their mathematical thinking with creativity. The learning continues this week as student work towards participating in a simulated “shoe store,” where they will be given a budget to purchase other shoe designs and sell their own shoes, and calculate their profit. This activity will help build their understanding of real-world financial concepts such as budgeting, spending and profit.
Reading
In Reading, students have been building their independence and engagement through the use of online platforms such as Get Epic. They have been learning how to log in, access their individual goals and select “good fit” books that match their reading level and interests.
Students have explored both fiction and non-fiction texts, developing their comprehension skills by identifying important information and reflecting on their understanding. They have also been encouraged to think about what strategies supported their reading and what challenges they encountered.
Additionally, some students have participated in Acadience assessments to help monitor their reading progress and inform future learning. It has been fantastic to see students taking greater ownership of their reading choices and building confidence in their abilities.
Special Events & Celebrations
We recently celebrated Harmony Week, recognising and valuing the rich cultural diversity within our community. On Friday, students were fortunate to participate in a special session with a guest from the Torres Strait Islands, who shared insights into her culture through storytelling, music and dance. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
We also held our Learning Expo, where student work was proudly showcased and celebrated. A highlight of the expo was the display of students’ Inquiry projects, particularly their creative emotions board games. It was fantastic to see students confidently sharing their learning with others and celebrating their efforts.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another great fortnight of learning ahead.
Kindest wishes,
The Grade 3/4 Team
