Grade 1 & 2 Learning Updates

Our Grade 1 and 2 students have been busy engaging in a range of exciting learning experiences across all curriculum areas!

Book Week Highlights

A definite highlight of the term was last week’s Book Week celebrations. Students thoroughly enjoyed the many activities on offer, including the popular Book Tasting Restaurant set up in the library, where they had the opportunity to sample a variety of exciting books and discover new favourites.

We also loved meeting our guest author and illustrator, who shared insights into the creative process behind writing and illustrating books. Another memorable experience was meeting Lego Master Ryan, whose visit inspired students to think creatively and embrace their imaginations.

A huge thank you to Mrs Prasel for all her hard work in organising a fantastic week of celebrations for our students. The Book Week Parade was a tremendous success, and we were amazed by the effort and creativity shown in this year’s costumes. Well done to all our talented parents and carers for helping bring so many wonderful book characters to life!

Literacy

In Literacy, our students continue to build their knowledge of spelling patterns and tricky words through our InitiaLit spelling program. Grade 2 students have also been working to develop their comprehension skills by learning how to identify the main idea in a text.

This week, students enjoyed reading about lighthouses and discovered why the job of a lighthouse keeper no longer exists in Australia. Students have also been exploring rich vocabulary and sentence structure through the picture books Wanted and The Lost Girl, using the authors’ writing as inspiration for creating their own engaging sentences.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been developing their addition skills this week by using mental strategies such as friends of ten, bridging through ten, and doubles to solve problems efficiently. We have also begun exploring how to write addition sentences vertically and using place value to solve more complex addition problems. Some students have been challenged to apply regrouping strategies as an extension to their learning.

Inquiry Learning

Inquiry has been full of creativity and collaboration! Students have now created their shadow puppets and theatres and are busy practising their performances. They have been working together to refine their presentations and are very excited to showcase their Shadow Puppet Plays at next Friday’s EXPO. We cannot wait to share their hard work with families and the wider school community.

Wellbeing

Over the past few weeks, our wellbeing focus has been on the school values Be a Learner and Be Kind. Together, we have discussed what these values look like during explicit teaching sessions, including demonstrating whole-body listening, thinking carefully before answering questions, and contributing ideas when sharing with a partner.

Next week, our focus will shift to Being Kind during sports and games, with students learning how to use respectful, encouraging, and supportive language when participating in team activities and playground games.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, creativity, and positive attitudes our Grade 1 and 2 students continue to demonstrate each day. We look forward to sharing more learning highlights with you soon!
