School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

3

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is an evidence-based framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures. Using consistent practices throughout the school – including explicit teaching of expectations, responding to behaviours using evidence-based strategies, and providing ongoing positive reinforcement – our school community provides a supportive environment to improve students social, emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes.
At Badger Creek Primary School, our acknowledgement system celebrates our students’ efforts to enact our school values – Be Kind, Be Safe and Be a Learner. Students are regularly acknowledged with a Value Token and provided in-the-moment, specific, positive feedback. Each classroom has a chart, where after a student is acknowledged 10 times, they receive a Bunjil Token. This is placed into one of our trees at Bunjil’s Place to vote for a whole-school acknowledgment, promoting teamwork and belonging.
Benefits of SWPBS:

  • increased respectful and positive behaviour
  • increased time focused on instruction
  • improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices
  • a predictable learning environment with
  • improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance

RR – Respectful Relationships

Respectful Relationships Education is taught at Badger Creek Primary School as part of the Victorian Curriculum, aligning with Health and the Personal and Social Capabilities Curriculum. Respectful Relationships promotes respect, equality and positive attitudes, while teaching our students how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.
The Victorian Government provides ongoing support to schools as part of its commitment to respectful relationships and creating a culture of positive change. Badger Creek Primary School utilises the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program in each classroom to support students to understand, express and regulate their emotions, to recognise positive qualities in themselves and others, practise positive self-talk, enhance social problem-solving skills, recognise signs of stress and explore coping strategies, understand the importance of help-seeking, promote respect for diversity and difference, and build positive and respectful relationships.
Our students are actively engaged in their learning, including through the use of cooperative games, role plays, investigations and rich discussion. At Badger Creek Primary School, we believe that building positive and respectful relationships increases their sense of connectedness, belonging and happiness at school, leading to better health, wellbeing and academic outcomes.
