At Badger Creek Primary School, we offer Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as a valuable second language for our students. Auslan serves not only as a language but also as a bridge to communication within the Australian deaf and hard of hearing community. Learning Auslan from an early age enriches our students’ communication abilities and nurtures empathy and cultural understanding.
Our program emphasises hands-on learning experiences that occur weekly. Students engage with stories, songs, rhymes, and observe signed conversations to grasp the importance of facial expressions, body language, and etiquette. This approach not only teaches Auslan but also fosters empathy and appreciation for Deaf culture and communication methods.
Interactive activities such as conversations, games, and real-life examples help students develop practical skills and fluency in Auslan. Topics covered include (but are not limited to), alphabet fingerspelling, greetings, emotions, animals, people, descriptors, numbers, transport, sport, grammar, and deaf culture. Our Auslan teacher provides a supportive environment where all students can learn, grow, and contribute to a more inclusive community.
