Yarra Ranges Physical Maths Day Challenge

On Wednesday the 15th of October four 5/6 students went to the Yarra Junction sports centre to compete in some activities for physical maths day. The activities involved using sport and logical thinking together to win the most points. We were competing against many schools in the area.

We started by racing in teams to play connect 4 against another school. It was exciting and stressful. We won two of the games. Another game we played was rubrix, kind of like a rubik’s cube but made from cones. There were three rows of four cones, and we had to remember what colour order they were in, and we raced to solve them before the other team.

We played around the world, and we had to roll some dice to make a multiplication sum to solve, to get to the next station and then we had to race all the way around the 12 countries and if we were in the first ten to finish then we got extra tokens for our team. One of our students came 7th scoring us an extra 4 tokens for our team.

We made a Jenga tower and then had to make another tower as tall as possible, but we were only allowed to move one block at a time, so it was slow work. We had to do it without knocking the tower down. There was a maze where we could see our way around but there was tape for the walls. We had a map (but it was upside down) and we had to read the map to find the spots in order, we had to accomplish it in the quickest time.

We also had maths fluency sheet with 148 questions on it. We had 8 minutes to answer as many as we could. Our best was 82. It was really hard!

At the end in our teams, we had to work out the answers to the questions and then place our multiple-choice answers facing the right way.

It was amazing and very fun even though we didn’t win anything. If you get the chance, you should definitely go!
