Prep News, Term 3 – Week 4

Exploring Texts

Over the past week we have been learning about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction texts. We have used the Zoos Victoria Animal Fact sheets to learn about the Spotted Tree Frog, we then practiced using what we have read and putting it into our own words to write down facts. We learnt about the frog’s animal features, diet, habitat and life cycle. Here are some beautiful Non-Fiction pieces we created:

InitiaLit

During InitiaLit we have continued to learn about digraphs (two letters that make one sound) like ‘sh’ making /sh/ as in shell. We also learnt another new letter ‘q’ that makes a /kw/ sound. Q is a tricky letter, because when we write ‘q’, we also need a ‘u’. ‘kw’ is spelt using /qu/ like in the words quiet queen.

Numeracy

We have been sequencing the days of the week, focusing on what comes before or after a particular day. Some of us have begun to learn the months of the year in sequence too.

Inquiry – Discovery

The preps are LOVING our discovery unit this term. So far we have made playdough (to make a model goat) and experimented and designed boats using aluminium foil. We tested the boats, as they needed to float. Sadly some of them sunk…

We then looked closely at our designs and wondered if we could discover anything common between the designs that floated, or sunk that could help us tweak our first design and create a better second design. We are all very excited to test them out early next week!

Digital Technologies

Making safe choices online and when using technology is very important. We know that keeping our information private is a great choice. We also know that it is a great idea to have an adult with us when we are online, just in case we need their help as it keeps us safe.

We are looking forward to welcoming back Kaisey next week and we hope that she has had a wonderful time on her teaching rounds! Mrs C
