Grade 1/2 News!
We were so proud to see our Grade 1/2 students presenting at last week’s assembly. For those families who were unable to attend, our students confidently showcased their learning about character traits by sharing their writing about the fairy tale characters we have been studying. They also taught the whole school—and our families—how to spell the word “because” using the special song they have learnt through InitiaLit. It was wonderful to see their confidence and enthusiasm on display!
It was also lovely to see our students’ beautiful paper lantern artwork proudly displayed at last week’s Nocturne Winter Street Festival in Healesville. Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to visit and support this wonderful community event.
In Our Learning  Â
Literacy
Students have been using adjectives to describe the settings for familiar fairy tales.
In InitiaLit 1, students have learnt and revised the spelling patterns for the sounds /aw/ (claw) and /au/ (launch), while also learning the FLOSS Rule for spelling words ending in -ff, -ll and -ss.
In InitiaLit 2, students have continued developing their reading and spelling knowledge of words containing silent letters, including /w/ (write), /b/ (climb) and /k/ (know). They have also been practising their inferring skills—using what they already know together with clues from the text to make meaning.

Mathematics
In Maths, we have continued our learning about multiplication as repeated addition and understanding “groups of” by organising objects into rows and columns to create arrays. Students have learnt to label arrays using the multiplication symbol (for example, 3 × 4) and have used skip counting strategies to find the total. Next, students will begin learning about division, where they will share a whole collection into equal groups.
All students have now received their personal login details for Think Square. We encourage students to log in at home to practise their mental mathematics skills. We especially recommend the “Friend Circuits” activity to help develop automatic recall of Friends of Ten facts.

Inquiry Learning
A big thank you to the families who donated boxes and bottles to support our Inquiry learning this week. Students have had a wonderful time creating pan flutes and shakers, which they will use to produce sound effects for their upcoming shadow puppet performances.
We are still seeking donations of approximately 18 large moving boxes. If you have any available, we would greatly appreciate your support.
We look forward to meeting with some of our families at next week’s SSG meetings. A reminder that 3-Way Interviews will be held on Monday 24th August.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
