What a terrific start we have had in Prep for Term Two!
Every Monday is Library and Class Readers Day. It has been so lovely to hear how well the kids are doing, sounding out words with you, or reading them by sight at home. We have officially learnt nine sounds and letters now. We can put them together to make different combinations and then sound out the beginning, middle and end of the word we have created to read it and then write it. It’s such an exciting time. Well done learning Legends! This Friday is National Family Reading Month; we can’t wait to hear about all the wonderful books you read with your loved ones.
We are also perfecting our letter formation. Look at our beautiful handwriting!
Last Friday, we honored all those who sacrificed for us, learning about ANZAC Day. We made ANZAC day cookies with 5/6C and learnt that the biscuits were originally made to replace bread as they kept for longer, without spoiling. We designed some beautiful poppy flowers and used them to decorate a poster to hang in our classroom.
The Story Book Mentor Text we have studied is ‘A Nice Walk in the Jungle’ by Nan Bodsworth. We all found it very funny that the teacher Miss Jellaby kept saying she was listening to Tim trying to warn her about something, but she really wasn’t. Because Miss Jellaby was so distracted by the wonders of the jungle, her whole class got eaten by a boa constrictor. Luckily at the end she saves them all and winds the boa around a tree. We made some beautiful jungle animal inspired artworks and then wrote a sentence about it. This was so much fun, even Mrs Douglas came to see what we were doing. Check out our finished pieces below:

In Maths, we have learnt about the days of the week and different things we do each day at home and school. We also spoke about morning, afternoon and evening and drew pictures of activities that we do at these times, sticking them on the board in the correct sequence. Eric Carle’s story The Very Hungry Caterpillar helped us to remember the order of the days of the week. We had puppets that we used to retell the story and act it out.
This week we have started a new maths strategy, Count On 0, 1, 2, 3. This helps us to know that it is okay to count on using fingers (but only if the collection we are adding is less than 3.) We have also begun to memorise number facts. Our focus has been Friends of Ten, which are all the number facts that equal ten. These can also be called number bonds. We are also practicing writing numerals. Here are some photos of the ‘friends of ten’ facts we have learnt:

Our Term Two Inquiry topic is The Concept of Change. We have begun to understand different ways that things can change over time. Such as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. A human growing older and a house being built. We are very excited to plant some seeds and observe what changes there will be.

We have also practiced how to pronounce Wominjeka (Welcome) and Wawa (Hello) correctly and we are perfecting using AUSLAN (Thanks Mrs M for teaching us) to sign our Acknowledgement each morning.
Please don’t forget that Cross Country is next week on Friday. We will also be sending home passwords for your child’s access to an online Phonics Program subscription, Fast Phonics. This is free, so please login and use it as often as you would like to at home anytime.
It is so nice to be back, Marissa and Kaisey.
