This week, our P–2 students had the exciting opportunity to visit CERES Sustainability Farm in Brunswick as part of our Inquiry unit on Sustainability. What better way to deepen our understanding than by taking part in the engaging Zero Waste program!
During the visit, we explored the 5 R’s of waste management: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. We discussed how each of these actions helps us better care for our environment. Students also went on a nature walk, using tongs to collect litter along the way, and learned about the types of rubbish we encounter and how to dispose of them responsibly. We even discovered how CERES traps rubbish before it flows into the ocean — a powerful reminder of the impact we can have.
We then delved into the fascinating world of worms, learning about their unique features (including the “saddle”) and the vital role they play in composting. One of the highlights of the day was making our own recycled paper — and exploring other eco-friendly samples, including one surprisingly made from kangaroo poo!
It was a fun, hands-on experience that left us feeling inspired and empowered to take care of our planet — and excited to see what changes we can make right here at Badger Creek Primary School!
