Grade 5/6 News, Term 3 – Week 6

What another fabulous fortnight in 5/6 land!

Hoop Time was such a success! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces throughout the day, along with some fantastic sportsmanship. We were incredibly proud of the way our students supported one another, stepped outside their comfort zones and simply had a go! Whether they were experienced basketballers or trying something new, everyone contributed to making it such a positive and memorable day for our students.

“In Hoop time, the sportsmanship was really good by everyone.” Tilly

“My favourite part was Reggie throwing me an alley-oop” – Tate

In Exploring Texts, we have continued working on our Passion Projects, with students presenting their completed projects in front of their grades. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills and confidence, while sharing something they are passionate about with their peers. We were so proud of the courage and enthusiasm shown by our presenters!

“I felt nervous but I did really well” Anneke

“The presentations were really good because everyone used a clear voice and interesting topics that you didn’t know about.” Tilly

In Maths, students have been busy collecting their own data and representing it using different graphs. We have explored how to analyse our data sets by finding the mean, median and mode. This week, we have moved into our new focus of Mass and Capacity, where students will continue developing their measurement skills through a range of hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks.

In Inquiry, we have continued our Journey to Discovery unit with another exciting hands-on challenge! Students were provided with balloons, fishing wire, paper clips and a straw and challenged to design a balloon rocket that could travel along the fishing wire between two chairs while carrying as many paper clips as possible.

Students had to test their designs, make adjustments and try again to improve their results. This activity was a wonderful way to promote persistence, perseverance, problem-solving and teamwork, and there was plenty of excitement as (some of) the rockets took off!

“It was so much fun building the rockets. Mya and I tried and tried and tried and I thought we had it but it just blew away!” – Emmalyn

We can’t wait to see what the next fortnight brings, there’s lots happening in the 5/6 space!
