Grade 3/4 News, Term 2 – Week 2

Hello BCPS Community,

A warm welcome back to Term 2! We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Easter holiday with your loved ones. It has been wonderful to see students return refreshed and ready for learning.

Writing
This week, students have been exploring persuasive writing. We have been learning about key features such as forming strong arguments, identifying the intended audience, and using emotive language to influence the reader.
In Week 3, our focus will shift to sentence structure and how vocabulary choices impact the audience. Students will practice patterned writing to help them write like authors and strengthen their expression.

Mathematics
This fortnight, our learning is centred on fractions. Students are developing their understanding of how to identify, represent, and write fractions. They are also exploring fractions in shapes, number lines, and fraction walls. Engaging activities include creating fraction pictures to deepen understanding in a hands-on way. Ask your child what fraction picture they designed and what fractions it incorporated.

Reading
Our reading focus has been on building oral fluency through choral reading, partner reading, and comprehension activities. Students are practising how to:

  • Read at an appropriate pace by following along with a group
  • Track text accurately
  • Use punctuation to guide fluency and expression
  • Pause and emphasise meaning when reading
  • Develop and correctly pronounce new vocabulary

In Week 3, we will begin exploring connections in reading, including text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. Students will learn how to link ideas across texts. For example:
“Dear Earth reminds me of the text Let’s Save Antarctica because they both provide suggestions on how to protect the environment.”

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students are being immersed in the Age of Exploration, sparking their curiosity about how people travelled and discovered new places in the past. We are exploring the tools and techniques used by early explorers and comparing them to modern navigation methods. Students are learning how navigation has changed over time, from using the stars and simple maps to advanced technologies like GPS.

Events
Last Thursday, students represented our school at the District Athletics event. We were incredibly proud of their sportsmanship and positive behaviour throughout the day. They represented our school with pride, and it was a fantastic experience for all involved.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another great fortnight of learning ahead.

Kindest wishes,
The Grade 3/4 Team
