Grade 3/4 News, Term 1 – Week 5

Hello BCPS community,

We hope everyone has had a wonderful couple of weeks. It has certainly been a busy and exciting time in the 3/4 learning space!

Our students have been engaged, thoughtful and enthusiastic across all areas of learning — and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.

Reading In Reading, we have been building fluency and comprehension through choral reading, partner reading and responding to comprehension questions. Students have been practising reading with expression and pausing at punctuation to help their reading sound smooth and meaningful. You might like to ask your child to read a short passage aloud to you at home and explain what was happening in the text — can they tell you both the literal meaning (what the text says) and what they can infer (what they think is happening beneath the surface)?

Writing In Writing, we have continued exploring our class text Wurrtoo, focusing on identifying character traits and how authors reveal these through actions, dialogue and descriptive language. Students have now begun drafting their own narratives about an Australian animal heading off on an adventure!

We are encouraging students to think carefully about building tension, describing their setting, and developing strong character traits. You might like to ask your child:

  • What animal did you choose and why?
  • What challenge does / will your character face?
  • How are you showing your character’s personality through their actions?

We would love families to be part of the storytelling process — perhaps you could help your child think of an exciting twist in their adventure!

Mathematics In Mathematics, we have shifted our focus to length, perimeter and area. Students have been applying their understanding in a very engaging way.de One lesson saw the students constructing containment yards for dinosaurs! They have needed to carefully measure side lengths, using a 1 metre piece of string, then calculate the total perimeter and explain how they got their answers.

Inquiry In Inquiry, we have been examining stereotypes — what they are, how they form, and why it is important to challenge assumptions. Students have participated in thoughtful discussions about fairness, identity and respect. It has been wonderful to see their maturity and willingness to consider different perspectives.

Swimming Carnival And of course, we can’t forget our amazing Swimming Carnival! What a fantastic day it was. We were so proud of the sportsmanship, encouragement and participation shown by our 3/4 students. It was wonderful to see everyone having a go and supporting one another.

What a jam-packed few weeks it has been! Thank you for your continued support at home — it truly makes a difference.

Have a wonderful rest of the week.

Kindest wishes,

3/4 Team
