Hello lovely families,
After a very wet week last week, our Grade 1/2 students have loved having the opportunity to enjoy some outdoor learning and play this week. The changing weather has provided the perfect opportunity for students to make predictions, observations, and connections as part of our Inquiry learning.
In Maths, students have been building their understanding of subtraction by exploring a range of helpful strategies. These have included using tens facts, doubles, and “jumping back 10” to solve problems. Students have practised using number lines, counters, drawings, and finding the difference to solve subtraction stories. It has been fantastic to see students becoming more confident in explaining their thinking and trying different ways to solve problems.
In Exploring Texts (writing), students have continued learning about the Wurundjeri seasons and how they reflect changes in weather, plants, animals, and everyday life throughout the year. Students have enjoyed comparing these seasons with the four seasons many of us know today and are developing a deeper appreciation and understanding of Wurundjeri culture and knowledge. Through stories, discussions, and shared texts, students have also been practising informative writing by identifying text features and recording facts about each season.
In InitiaLit 1 this week, students focused on reading words with the ‘ar’ sound, as in star, and learning how adding the suffix ‘s’ changes nouns into plurals (for example, book/books). It has been wonderful to see students continuing to grow in confidence when decoding both regular and tricky words.
InitiaLit 2 students revised spelling rules for adding the suffixes ‘ing’, ‘s’, ‘er’, and ‘ful’ to base words. In Reading Comprehension, students explored the strategy “Making Connections” by linking their own experiences to characters and events in stories. They completed a “text-to-text” activity using both informative and imaginative texts about kookaburras.
We encourage all families to continue listening to your child read regularly. Practising writing tricky words, as well as reading them, is also a great way to support learning at home. Tricky words can be found in their reading diaries.
We are super excited for our whole day Science Incursion next Wednesday. Please ensure you have checked compass events regarding permission and payment.
Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a wonderful weekend!
