5/6 Newsletter, Term1 – Week 3

It has been a wonderful start to the year in 5/6! It has been fantastic to see students settling in so positively, and some amazing learning is already taking place.

Across the grades, we have developed our Classroom Promise and our Class Acknowledgements. To guide our thinking, we explored the beautiful text Finding Our Heart, which helped us reflect on the kind of classroom community we want to build together. The conversations were thoughtful and mature, and students demonstrated a strong understanding of empathy, kindness and responsibility.

We have also begun exploring the text Hey Little Ant, which has sparked rich discussions and inspired us to learn more about ants. Did you know that it would take approximately 100,000–200,000 ants to carry a small child (well, according to Google!)? This fun fact certainly captured our attention and has led to some curious inquiry questions.

Our Grade 5 students have been FABULOUS buddies, already stepping up as leaders and role models within our learning community. We are so proud of the way they are supporting others and embracing responsibility. Our Grade 6 students recently received their leadership badges at assembly. Prior to the ceremony, they practised the important life skill of confidently shaking hands and receiving their badge, a small but powerful moment in developing leadership presence.

In Maths, we have been learning about perimeter and area, using concrete materials to measure different spaces and objects around the school. Hands-on learning has helped students build strong conceptual understanding while working collaboratively.

Our Inquiry unit this term focuses on ethics and emotions. Students are engaging in deep discussions about making decisions that might be challenging, affect others, or require us to think carefully about fairness and consequences. These conversations have been thoughtful and reflective, demonstrating maturity and respect for differing perspectives.

In Respectful Relationships, we have been exploring emotions in greater depth, including how emotions can intensify and what that might look and sound like. Students are building their emotional vocabulary and learning strategies to recognise and manage strong feelings in healthy ways.

We are incredibly proud of the positive start 5/6 has made and can’t wait to continue seeing the wonderful growth and learning unfold throughout the term!

From the,
The VERY proud 5/6 Team.
