Understanding School Refusal

With lots of illness around our community, and lots of children staying away to recover (which we are grateful for!), there comes a time when they need to come back to school! This may lead to some school refusal.

School refusal is when a child becomes emotionally distressed about attending school. Unlike typical complaints about waking up early or disliking homework, school refusal often involves high anxiety, frequent absences, or meltdowns before school. It’s not “misbehaving” – it’s often a sign your child is feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unsafe.

Common causes include social anxiety, learning difficulties, changes in routine, or challenges like bullying or separation anxiety. While it can feel frustrating or worrying as a parent, early support makes a big difference.

What can you do? Start by listening calmly and validating your child’s feelings (I can see your feeling… worried/nervous/scared about coming back to school)– even if they can’t explain them clearly. Keep communication open with us and work as a team with your child’s teachers or wellbeing staff (Emma, Nerae and Taylah). Encourage small steps back into routine, even if it starts with a shorter day or a support buddy.

Reassure your child that it’s okay to ask for help and that school is a safe place where adults care about them. With the right support, most children can return to school and feel confident again.

If you’re concerned, don’t hesitate to reach out to our wellbeing team we are here to support you.
