Taking Care of the Carers: Why Self-Care Matters

Caring for a loved one with a disability is a wonderful act of kindness and strength. Many parents and family members play an important role as carers, giving their time and love every day. But caregiving can also be tiring and challenging, which is why it’s so important for carers to take time for themselves too.

Self-care means doing things that help you feel happy, healthy, and calm. For parents and carers, this could be as simple as taking a short walk, enjoying a quiet cup of tea, or spending time with friends. When carers look after their own well-being, they have more energy and patience to support the people they care for.

It’s okay to ask for help and take breaks. Even a few minutes to breathe deeply or listen to your favourite music can make a big difference. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

We want all parents and carers in our school community to know they are appreciated and supported. Taking care of yourself helps you keep caring with love and strength. If you ever need ideas or support, don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can create a caring community for everyone.
