How do you help your child prepare for changes?

Preparing children for change—whether it’s a new teacher, different routines, or a shift in how learning happens—is an important part of helping them feel safe and confident at school. Change can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming for many children. As parents, your support plays a key role in helping them navigate these moments smoothly.

One of the most effective ways to help is by providing clear and simple information. Talk with your child about what will be different and why the change is happening. Keeping explanations calm and positive helps reduce worry. Encourage your child to ask questions and share their feelings and reassure them that it’s normal to feel unsure when something new is coming.

Children also benefit greatly from emotional reassurance. Listening attentively, acknowledging their feelings, and offering comfort helps them feel secure. You can remind them of times they coped well with change before—this builds confidence and resilience.

You can also support your child by practising or gradually introducing new routines at home. For example, adjusting bedtime, practising getting ready earlier, or talking through what their new school day might look like can make transitions feel more familiar. Keeping some consistent routines in place during times of change gives children a sense of stability.

Most importantly, children take cues from the adults around them. When you approach change with optimism, calmness, and trust in their ability to cope, they are more likely to feel capable and confident.

With clear communication, reassurance, and gentle preparation, children can adapt well and approach new experiences with a positive mindset.
