It has been a busy and exciting fortnight in the land of 5/6 — filled with excursions, new experiences, and plenty of fun! Hear from some of our students about the adventures we have been on!
Lego Robotics Excursion.
Written by Oliver and Anneke.
Last Thursday, 20 students went to Swinburne University to the Wantirna campus, for a program called Lego Robotics. We competed in partners, who were our pairs for the whole day. We had to code our robot to move forward and backwards and to lift stuff, push and drop stuff by using Lego pieces. We had nice staff from the university who guided us throughout the day. The students that won the prize for the points in the challenge were Rory and Hunter. The winner of the innovation project, building our ideas out of Lego, we were given a topic to build on, was Anneke and Oliver. It was a fun day out.

Art Centre Excursion- Bookbinder.
Written by Oliver and Anneke.
We went to the Art Centre to see a show called the Bookbinder. It was about a boy who worked as a bookbinder and then he ripped the fabrics of a book and fell into a jug of water. Then he was in the fabrics of the book he broke. He found his way to the page of the book that he ripped out. Then he sewed it up with a string of hair, a knife of human bones and a needle sharp as a tooth on which the page shall be sewn. It was an interesting play. And a fun day out.

Melbourne Museum and IMAX Excursion.
Written by Oliver and Anneke.
It was a long and crazy bus ride to the city. When we got there, we started off by going to the museum. We saw an exhibit about the gold rush time, a dinosaur one and a bug’s life one. In the gold rush time, we saw the Welcome Nugget, Cobb and Co Carriage, olden day radio, tv, old music source, and lots of dioramas. In the dinosaur area we saw the triceratops walk and we saw lots of bugs on display and we learnt all about them. Then we went to IMAX to see Australia 3D. It was about Australia in the past. It was a fun day out in the city to learn all about history.
“I loved learning about all the different things about Australia and our past along with dinosaurs and bugs. And I loved IMAX as well. Though after my eyes hurt. But it was fun.”- Oliver
“I loved seeing all the different exhibitions we got to go to and I learnt lots of new things.”-Anneke

“I really liked it because it was very creative and the IMAX was very educational.”-Reece
We also had our girls’ footy gala day! On Monday, we took 32 Grade 5/6 girls to compete against other schools. Our Badger girls stepped out of their comfort zones and demonstrated fantastic teamwork, resilience, pride, and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was wonderful to see the girls encouraging one another, trying their best, and representing our school so positively. We were incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they supported each other both on and off the field. Plus, our new sports guernseys looked fantastic!
Back in the classroom, we have completed the drafts of our narrative writing pieces based on our endangered animals and have now begun our informative writing pieces on the same animals. To support our research, we visited the Sanctuary to observe the animals up close and ask questions to deepen our understanding. The students showed great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the visit, and we can’t wait for you to read their finished pieces!

Our Inquiry projects are also well underway! Students have formed their groups and selected which part of the Gold Rush timeline their diorama will focus on. We are excited to watch these creative projects come to life over the coming weeks!
We look forward to another wonderful fortnight in 5/6!
