This term in Auslan, students in Grades 1-6 are beginning each session by introducing themselves to a partner, fingerspelling their name. E.g. My name S-A-R-A-H. Your name what?
Fingerspelling is a crucial part of Auslan as it’s used for proper nouns (people, places, brands) and for when direct signs do not exist.
You can help build your fingerspelling fluency (reading and forming letters) at home by following along with the below video to learn the alphabet, practice current sight/spelling words, playing word guessing games such as ‘fat cat’.
You can also, click here to learn how to greet someone, along with some basic response signs.
If you are a Prep student/family, we haven’t started this in Auslan yet, but you are welcome to give it a try at home! Prep students have learned colours, which can be viewed and revised here and will begin learning shapes next week.
Stay tuned for some new Auslan fluency games in the next few weeks.
