Grade 5/6 News, Term 4 – Week 4

Wow, Week 4 already! Can you believe how quickly Term 4 is flying by? There has been plenty happening across our Grade 5/6 classrooms, and we have so much to look forward to as we head towards the end of the year!

Our Grade 5 students have been busy preparing their leadership presentations for 2027. It has been wonderful to see them reflecting on what makes a great leader and beginning to think about the important role they will play as our school leaders next year. We wish them all the very best as they put the finishing touches on their presentations!

Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students have begun preparing for their Graduation! It is hard to believe that their primary school journey is nearly coming to an end. We are looking forward to celebrating this very special milestone with them. A friendly reminder that Graduation will be held on Tuesday, 15th December.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming back some familiar faces to BCPS for our Grade 6 Pizza Night! Our past Grade 6 students, who are now in Year 7, returned to share their experiences of high school with our current Grade 6 students. What a fantastic opportunity it was for our students to ask questions, hear firsthand what high school is really like and gain some valuable advice as they prepare for their own transition next year. From making new friends to navigating new routines, there was plenty to talk about!

It was also lovely to welcome back our past students, hear all about their high school adventures and see how much they have grown. A big thank you to our Year 7 students for giving up their time to come back and share their experiences with us!

“It was really good to listening to the year 7s stories from High School. I’m really looking forwards to High School now” – Rory

“Lots of the Year 7s were really helpful with sharing information. They didn’t just tell us about the good side but they told us the true reality too. I’m really excited for High School.” – Tilly

“Good. Fun. I listened to a lot of information about High School.” – Emmy

“It was nice catching up with old friends and eating pizza” – Phoebe

What a wonderful journey we have been on with Wonder by R.J. Palacio! As we near the end of our text study, it has been fantastic to hear the thoughtful conversations taking place in our classrooms. Throughout the text, we have explored the importance of kindness, empathy, acceptance and, most importantly, why we should ALWAYS choose kindness! Students have shared some beautiful reflections about the way we treat others and how even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.

This week, students have begun writing a very special letter to Auggie. In their letters, they are sharing what they have learnt from his story, particularly about kindness, and what they would like Auggie to know after reading about his first year of school.

To wrap up our unit, students will also have the opportunity to watch the movie adaptation of Wonder. We can’t wait to hear their thoughts as they compare the book to the film!

Over the past three weeks, we have been fortunate to welcome presenters from Sex Education Australia, who have been working with our students to explore personal development and puberty. These sessions have encouraged students to ask questions, challenge misconceptions and develop a greater understanding of themselves and others. It has been fantastic to see students approaching these conversations with maturity, curiosity and respect, even when some topics have pushed them a little outside their comfort zones!

“It was a good experience to hear how bodies work for different people.”

                                     “It was very educational.”

“It gave me a lot of information.”

We are looking forward to making the most of our final weeks together and finishing 2026 with plenty of wonderful memories!
