Grade 1/2 Update, Term 2 – Week 6

Hello lovely 1/2 families,

Over the past few weeks, our students have been exploring the seven Wurundjeri seasons through research, discussions, and shared learning experiences. Students have now completed informative posters about their chosen season, showcasing all they have discovered about the changes in weather, plants, animals, and life throughout the Calendar year. We are excited to display and share these within our school community so families can learn alongside us and celebrate the wonderful learning that has taken place.

In Maths, students have recently completed a unit on addition and subtraction. Throughout the unit, students developed and practised a range of mental maths strategies including friends of ten, doubles, near doubles, and bridging to ten. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence and flexibility when solving number problems.

Next week, we will begin our new unit on Time. Students will be learning to identify the features of calendars and analogue clocks, measure the time between events, locate important dates, and build their skills in reading both analogue and digital clocks.

In Writing, students will begin exploring persuasive texts through engaging storybooks. Grade 1 students will be reading and analysing The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers, while Grade 2 students will explore The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. These rich mentor texts will support students in developing their understanding of persuasive language, opinions, and different points of view.

Last week, our junior students participated in an exciting Science Incursion. Students took part in hands-on experiments involving weather, sound, light, and colour mixing. It was truly one of the highlights of our year so far! We were incredibly proud of our mini scientists, who approached every activity with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. Be sure to check out some of the wonderful photos from the day!

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
