What a fantastic start to Term 3 we’ve had in Grade 5/6! There has already been plenty of exciting learning happening across the cohort, with students diving enthusiastically into a range of new topics and challenges!
In Inquiry, we have begun our new unit, The Journey to Discovery. Students explored what the unit will involve this term and what they can look forward to. We are especially excited for our Electric Circuits Incursion next Wednesday, which will be a fantastic hands-on learning experience.
In Mathematics, we have been sharpening our multiplication skills by revisiting the stacking strategy. Students have been challenged to explain their thinking, tackle common misconceptions, and build confidence through collaborative learning and plenty of practice. It’s been wonderful to see students encouraging one another and celebrating their progress.
In Exploring Texts, we launched our new unit on causal explanation texts. Students have explored a variety of engaging examples, unpacking the features that make explanation texts effective, including asking a question in the title, writing in the present tense, organising ideas into clear paragraphs, and using technical and causal language, including causal conjunctions. We can’t wait to showcase the fantastic explanations they create over the coming weeks!
In Respectful Relationships, we began our new focus on Positive Coping. Through thoughtful discussions and real-life scenarios, students explored the
difference between positive and negative mindsets and reflected on how our thoughts can influence the way we respond to challenges. Together, we’ve been developing practical strategies to help us reframe unhelpful thinking and approach difficult situations with a more positive mindset.
Our SWPBS focus this week centred on being a good sport. Students reflected on what positive sportsmanship looks, sounds and feels like at BCPS, discussing the importance of showing respect, encouraging others, celebrating everyone’s efforts, and demonstrating kindness and resilience, whether winning or losing. These conversations have been a wonderful reminder that the way we treat others is just as important as the game itself.

Active Travel at Badger Creek Primary School
Next week, our Grade 5 students will be learning all about active travel through a series of workshops delivered by Eastern Health. Students will learn about the physical, social, and environmental benefits of active travel and road safety. They will then design posters sharing their knowledge with the rest of our school community and plan a Walk to School Day. In preparation for the workshops, Eastern Health is keen to hear your thoughts about how children are currently travelling to school and what might support them to walk, ride, or scoot to school.
