Grade 1/2 News, Term 2 – Week 8

We hope everyone enjoyed the King’s Birthday long weekend! It’s hard to believe we are already in Week 8, with just three weeks remaining this term.

Literacy (InitiaLit)
Our InitiaLit lessons continue to build students’ spelling and reading knowledge. In InitiaLit 1, students have been learning different ways to spell the sounds /or/ and /er/ and have been introduced to the split digraph a_e (as in cake). Students are learning that “bossy e” changes a short vowel sound into a long vowel sound, for example mat becomes mate.

In InitiaLit 2, students have been exploring the spelling patterns ‘are’ (as in beware) and ‘eer’ (as in cheer). Students have also been discussing how the comprehension strategy- visualising helps us to better understand the text we are reading.

A reminder that regular reading at home is one of the best ways to support your child’s learning. Daily reading is encouraged where possible, and we ask families to continue recording reading in student reading diaries. Please also spend a few minutes practising the tricky words located at the back of the diary.

Mathematics
We are shifting our focus to measuring time. Students will be exploring calendars, months of the year, the number of days in each month, and how to interpret information on a calendar. Through lots of hands-on activities, students will also learn to tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks, including o’clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to times.

Wellbeing & SWPBS
Our wellbeing focus is on understanding what showing respect looks like both inside and outside the classroom. As part of our SWPBS lessons, students are learning the importance of honouring the rules of games and sports, demonstrating fairness, respect, and good sportsmanship.

Inquiry
We are continuing our investigation into how things change. This week, students will explore forces, investigating how pushes and pulls can cause objects to move and change.

Upcoming Events
📅 Maths Expo – Week 9

We look forward to sharing more of our learning with you as we head towards the end of another busy and successful term!
