Auslan News, Term 3 – Week 6

Auslan

Students in Grade 3/4 and 5/6 are excitedly learning about Deaf Culture in Auslan for the second half of term.

In 3/4 we have begun reading the story of Helen Keller, learning about the challenges faced by deaf people and those around them. To experience some of these challenges, we have attempted moving around whilst losing our full sense of sight and hearing as well as learning about the hand alphabet and Braille.

In 5/6 we have watched videos involving real-life deaf examples and have held many discussions about the importance of inclusion and acceptance. Students have attempted participating in partner games whilst not using their voice, discovering a range of strategies that worked for them.

There have been many realisations about this topic so far across both cohorts.
