Do you ever wonder how to respond when your child comes home from school with a problem?

If you can keep this image in mind, it is sure to help…

Empathy: Listen and care.

Remember children that feel empathy from their parents and carers feel loved, cared for, supported and continue to talk to their care giver throughout their lives.

Empower: Let your child know that you believe in them. You believe that they have the skills to deal with this problem. Let them know you believe they are a problem solver. They are strong, courageous and have lots of skills to deal with this. Remind them of times they have worked things out before. This may include asking a teacher for help. Instil your values in them during this time. Make comments like, “I know you are going to show kindness during this tough time” or ask questions like, “How do you make sure everyone is included?”

You can support them while you empower them with statements like, “This is a tough problem, would you like my help to brainstorm ways you can solve the problem?”

Remember children that are empowered to solve problems have a much higher self esteem and develop a healthy independence.

Empathy without empowerment leaves children feeling like victims, hopeless and powerless.

Empowerment without empathy leaves children feeling unsupported and misunderstood and believing that they have to look after themselves.

A perfect balance between empathy and empowerment is challenging, but keeping the idea in the forefront of your mind whenever your child comes home with a problem will support them to grow into people who know they are cared for and capable!

This week in Art…

Hello families,

This week in art students are finishing off their various printmaking activities. Some classes are mounting their pieces ready to take home and other classes are still busily working towards their final artworks.

I have put together a little gallery of some of their work, which you’ll find below.

Prep – Monoprint funny face portraits: Students are currently working on their bodies using black marker with a focus on line and pattern.

Grade 1/2 – Gareth Lucus inspired collage birds: Students are putting the final touches on their collages. You’ll see a couple of the finished pieces in the attached gallery.

Grade 3/4 – Keith Haring inspired collagraph prints: Our 3/4 cohort have finished their prints and can now tell you all about geometric/organic shapes and the artist Keith Haring.

Grade 5/6 – Henri Matisse inspired Gelli prints: Our Students are so close to finishing their booklets of Matisse inspired prints. You’ll see a few of the individual artworks in the gallery below and one of our gorgeous finished booklets!

Well done to my BCPS artists! You have all outdone yourselves again.

This week in Prep…

Week Eight has only been a short week but the Foundation students have still managed to achieve a lot of learning in a small amount of time! We have loved hearing about what the preps got up to on their long weekend and we hope families had a lovely three days together.

Our ‘Smart Spelling’ word this week has been ‘sun’ and our sentence has been ‘The sun was up, but it was not hot’. Preps have done a wonderful job reading and sounding out the letters in the word sun as well as the words in the sentence. On Tuesday, our Grade 5 buddies came to our classroom and helped us make our very own suns! They look so wonderful on display up in the Muk Muk room.

This week in Reading, we have been focussing on retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story using the story ‘Rascal The Dragon’. Miss R told us about the beginning, middle and end of her long weekend, retelling the events that took place over the three days. Preps have been practicing retelling stories using the same terminology. You can help your child at home with their learning by asking them “what happened at the beginning/middle/end of that story?” after finishing a book or film.

During Writing lessons this week, Preps have really stretched themselves in their learning and have been practising their sentence writing. They have worked so hard to make sure their sentence starts with a capital letter, ends with a full stop and includes finger spaces between each word. A favourite activity this week has been looking at the book ‘Where’s Wally’ and writing our own sentence about where we think Wally is.

Our Numeracy topic this week has been teen numbers! Students have practised recognising teen numbers on tens frames and with unifix. They have also been building their own teen numbers with MAB blocks and writing these numbers with whiteboard markers. On Tuesday, the preps did a teen number search where they coloured in all the teen numbers. They have done such a great job with their maths, well done everyone!

PYJAMA (JARMIE) DAY
We are so proud of our Foundation students who have worked hard to achieve a whole class reward of ‘Popcorn and Movie’. This Monday the 20th of March, we are asking Foundation students to come to school wearing their pyjamas for our celebration. We are learning the /j/ sound that day, so “jarmies” will be the perfect outfit for our learning! Please ensure students still come to school in appropriate footwear for safety.

Reminders:

– Monday 20th March is Jarmie Day – please wear your pyjamas to school!

– Friday 31st of March is a curriculum day – no students at school on this day.

– Blue take home folders come back to school each Monday morning.

– You can also log on to Decodable Readers Australia to read books on a device at home.

Many thanks from the Foundation Team,
– Miss H, Miss R and Lis

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Dear Families,

What a SHORT but fun week we’ve had in Year 1/2, this week!

A big congratulations to all of our Year 1 students who finished their English Online Testing with Mrs Riley – she is super proud of you all! Parents of our Year 1s, please ask your children about the two books we read titled, ‘The Lunch Box’ and ‘The Beach Ball’. We even wrote a story about Zac from ‘The Lunch Box’!

This week in Literacy, we have focused on retelling the story by sequencing events in order. You can see some photos that show illustrations from texts we focused on this week. You can read both texts online, titled ‘Little Beauty’ by Anthony Browne and ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox. Can you put the pictures in the right order? It’s not as easy as it looks…!! We’ve included some helpful posters including our ‘fist to 5 retell’ that you and your child could use at home, when reading.

In Writing, we created a minibeast as inspiration for our writing. We labelled our minibeast and thought about character traits such as what they look like, or how they feel. This character development is in preparation for our upcoming unit on Narrative writing.

In Maths, we’ve continued our work on place value including reading, writing and making numbers with paddle pops sticks (bundles) and MAB blocks (hundreds, tens, ones), and ordering numbers using number lines. If your child would like some practise with ordering, we’ve included a task they could do at home, in our photos.

Next week in Literacy, we are focusing on summarising in Reading, and using effective beginnings for our Narrative writing. In Maths, we are moving onto using calculators to find multiples, and expanding numbers (e.g. 456 expanded is 400 + 50 + 6). We can’t wait to use the calculators!!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Year 1/2 Team

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

This week in Years Three Four for Maths, we have been learning about length. Please ask your child if they are a square or a rectangle. It sounds like a weird question, but it will, hopefully, make sense once your child has explained what this means. Be prepared to lay on the ground and have some marks made on the floor for where your head and feet are. We have also learnt that a spiral drawn on a piece of paper is much longer than first thought, and 180cm of bubble is closer to 200cm.

For Writing, we have continued with learning to build our persuasive skills. Having established our ability to produce reasons for our opinion, our students are now learning how to write this as a text. This is a challenging skill, but one that we will continue to developed.

With NAPLAN here, our Year Threes have been using the using the computers in preparation for their online assessments. We wish them all the best.
