From the Principal

We are 1 week closer to the spring holidays and I know a lot of children who are looking forward to it. There has been a lot of amazing learning achieved this term by so many people, a rest will be well in order.

Wishing for a Speedy Recovery

A few weeks ago I received some shocking news about one of our students Leon in grade 3. He had a big fall and was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital. It is with relief that I can tell you that Leon is making a steady recovery. The Royal Children’s Hospital is taking good care of him. Our thoughts are with the Thomas family right now, as we wish for Leon to make a full recovery. Some people may want help the Thomas family, if you can, please make a donation to the Royal Children’s Hospital, who are doing a wonderful job of caring for Leon.

End of term events

As we head into the last week of term, this is a friendly reminder…

Wednesday- Special Lunch and Footy Day. School Council 7pm

Building update

This week you will have noticed a big fence around the school, and a driveway put in place, and some demo completed in some rooms. It is very real now. Matt our trusty foreman has told me that next week we can expect to see some site buildings delivered to the court near the roundabout and some digging to the sewer to get our accessibility toilet ready.

Holidays

The holidays are fast approaching, and as we ask every holiday, please keep an eye on our beautiful school. If you see any concerning behaviour or damaged property (that isn’t a part of the rebuild project) around our school, let our friends at the Healesville or Lilydale Police know.

Term 4

It’s a 12 week term. A marathon! With so many events to look forward to, we will aim to get a list of events to you early in term 4 so you can mark them on your calendar. In the meantime Term 4 starts on Monday 3rd of October and ends on Tuesday the 20th of December (early finish at 1:30pm). We have Cup Day on the 1st of November this year. We also will let you know of an impending Professional Practice Day which will be a student free day (I will let you know about that one in next week’s newsletter). Our focus is on the biological sciences in term 4, so we look forward to studying the nature around us.

That’s about it for this week. Have a great weekend.

This week in Prep…

Week nine worked our Preps hard!

It had us doing swimming every day, spelling words for the South Australian Spelling Test, reading with the 1/2s and revising addition strategies for building teen numbers- just to name a few!

Swimming has been a magical learning experience for all of us. The children have learnt so many important swimming skills- such as floating, holding our breath, arm and leg motions, different swimming strokes and so much more! (And, us teachers have learnt a little more about the Preps and their needs post swimming!!)

A big special thank you to Michaela and Kristy for helping the Preps out this week! The daily bus rides and change room mayhem wouldn’t have been as smooth sailing if we didn’t have you both!

We’ve done our best to keep our bodies in the green zone over this busy week. As our days revolved around swimming, we made sure to tick off important learning (like Maths and Writing) before heading over to the pools. This way, we were able to come back to school and slip into some calm, predictable learning like SMART Spelling and Reading.

Our SMART spelling word couldn’t have come at a better time for us, as the word ‘beach’ linked so succinctly with swimming. Our vocabulary was very easily transferred across literacy with this focus word, as we were also Writing about Swimming! This really helped us to express our changing emotions and regulate our bodies over the week.

And on top of that, the CBA nominated book, Jetty Jumping was another fabulous connection. A much loved read aloud and craft came from this text Tuesday.

Of course, our tired bodies were still working extra hard on our return to school most days. So, ‘Sleeping Lions’ was a go-to game in our afternoons. Along with mindful colouring and story time.

We may be snoozing our way into week 10, but we are approaching the end of term with such proud hearts. Speaking of Pride, this term our Preps have focused on how we show our school value of Pride.

Every day, our handy helpers are in charge of monitoring the Pride seen across the learning spaces.

They always share their own expectations of their peers in the morning and give updates throughout the day.

Some examples of these are:

“I am looking for Preps who are showing pride in their work today.”

“I am looking for people showing pride in their uniform by not stretching their jumpers.”

“I saw someone showing Pride in their friends work.”

“I can see someone showing Pride in the way they are sitting calmly and focused on their learning.”

Looking into next term, we think the Preps have mastered what Pride looks and feels like. And we’ll be moving into how we can best promote Care and Support as a school value. This will be especially important as changes continue to happen with the school building project.

Some kind reminders from us:

-We are holding a Prep Picnic next Friday. We are asking Preps bring along a small plate of food. The smaller the better, due to the gorgeous & generous families we have in our Prep Community- we just wouldn’t want to be wasteful.

-The Preps will visit the Caine’s Arcade hosted by the 5/6s Tuesday. Small donations are encouraged for student participation in the games.

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

Hello to our families and friends.

It was so lovely to finally have some sunshine at school. We have been able to spend more time outside which is wonderful for everyone.

This week in the classrooms we have had a special focus on the power of our words.  Mrs. Whiteside helped us to understand that our words can make a difference to someone’s day either in a positive or negative way. At Badger Creek we strive to use the power of our words to remind friends of what they are great at, or why they are a good friend.  We each wrote our name on paper, then moved around the spaces sharing kind words about each other. It was so lovely to see the smiles on every students face as they read the kind messages their peers had left for them.

We are working hard to complete our inquiry learning this term. We are looking forward to presenting our ‘travel guide’ videos for our chosen countries. Next week we will be writing scripts, rehearsing using fluent presenting voices and filming short clips.

Finally, check out the photos from last weeks tabloid sports. Thank you for those parents who came to support our students.

IT’S TIME FOR CAINE’S ARCADE!

ROLL UP! ROLL UP! ROLL UP!

IT’S TIME FOR CAINE’S ARCADE!

The Grade 5/6s have been very busy putting the finishing touches onto their incredible cardboard arcade games. These actual working sideshow games have been created to entertain visitors to our open event. If you would like to look more deeply into the inspiration for this project, check it out here à https://cainemonroy.com/ . Basically, when Caine was 9 years old, he began to create playable cardboard arcade games, complete with ticket dispensers and prizes. Eventually word spread and he ended up raising more than enough money to put himself through college. His enterprise and ingenuity have inspired school projects around the world!

On Tuesday 13th September, our own arcade will be open to the students of Badger Creek PS. We have sent out a schedule to teachers so that all students will be able to join in the fun! There are around 15 different games. The Grade 5/6s have decided that their games will cost a silver coin to play – so bring along plenty of silver coins to play along. 20c and 50c pieces will make it easier, but the teachers will also write PLAY PASSES for students who bring in dollar notes ($5, $10, $20, etc).

This extraordinary event will be a FUNDRAISER for an incredibly worthy charity – The Kickstart Project Inc. The Kickstart Project Inc. is a Melbourne-based, non-profit charity which does amazing work for poverty-stricken communities in Kenya, with a specific focus on education, health care and sustainability. Even better, this organisation was set up by Badger Creek alumni, Esther Rijk. The Grade 5/6s have been exploring Esther’s website and have been humbled by the living conditions and facilities available to the young people at their schools. We were reflecting on how we are about to get a beautiful brand-new school, yet these young people have houses made out of scraps and their school’s floor has no carpet. Education is so valued and so important to the children and their families as it is seen as an opportunity to improve their lives. It makes us super proud to be able to support Esther’s work and help the kids growing up in the slum cities in Nairobi. Please check out The Kickstart Project Inc website here à https://thekickstartproject.com.au/ . If you like delicious food, Esther is also organising The Big Kenyan Feast. Find out more about it here à https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/944726

Any additional donations will be gratefully accepted. We will be inviting Esther in to hear firsthand about her journey and her work, and to receive our donation personally.

We look forward to hosting our ARCADE DAY on Tuesday 13th September and raising lots of money to support a life-changing cause.
