From the Principal

After Wednesday night it really got me thinking about how important community and music are for humans. After 2 years without live music performances and being able to come together I could sense that it was something missing from my life.

A few months ago I went to my first gig in the city (Sidenote I went to see Something for Kate, they were amazing!) and to be honest it felt really strange to be in a venue with lots of strangers. Wednesday night was something different for me. I looked around and saw our students performing with such passion and love for music, and families and friends looking on so proudly to these amazing people performing. It didn’t feel strange at all, it’s exactly what we should be doing again to help us recover from the last two years.

So a BIG thank you to every single one of you for coming along on Wednesday for our Open Night, and to the educators for preparing a wonderful afternoon of activities, the PFA for providing delicious treats for everyone and most importantly though is a thank you to all of our students who work hard and share their learning celebrations with us. We are so glad you are a part our Badger Creek School Community.

Did you think that was all? Wait till you hear about next week…

Next week is Reconciliation Week. It is an important week in the calendar as it is a time for us to work towards understanding Australia’s past and truth telling.

Through the week our student’s will be reading stories about reconciliation. On Tuesday selected students have been invited to attend the Worawa Sports Day.

Next Saturday the 4th of June we have our second Campfire Conversation, an opportunity for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community to join our local educators to discuss what cultural safety looks like at our local schools and what education might look like moving forward. The event will be on our FB page. The last Campfire Conversation was truly inspiring and we are so glad to be able to share another conversation, this time around a real campfire!

Pupil Free Day

Just a gentle reminder that the Department of Education have provided schools with an additional pupil free day to support with Professional Practice Days. For us it is next Friday the 3rd of June. Students will not be required to attend school this day. Contact CIRE if you require child care for that day.

Our staff will be moderating work on this day, and preparing to write reports. They very much appreciate the opportunity to be able to make time to do this.

Thank you PFA!

The Special Lunch Day and Pants for Plants Day were a hit today. A huge shout out to our PFA for their hard work in preparing for the day. Please remember if you are able to help out in anyway (Especially on the 16th of June, our next special lunch day) reach out to Michelle Overend on the schools socials OR let Brogan know so she can pass on your offer of help. Many hands make a light work!

That’s about it for this week. Thanks for your ongoing support for our school. Have a lovely weekend.

We had over 35 students participated in the sunshine at Don Road Sporting complex, with 13 students finishing in the top 10 and now progressing through to the Division Cross Country in June!

A fantastic effort from all our Badger Creek students, we are so proud of your efforts! Congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the Division Cross Country.

Pip, Harry, Bryce, Iggy, Tom, Max, Ryder, Henrietta, Josephine, Vinnie, Monty, Griffin and Kieran

In Physical Education, all students in Prep-6 have had a wonderful opportunity to be involved in an AFL Victoria incursion, where qualified coaches have come out and run through some AFL sessions.

Students have learned and developed their skills in kicking, marking, handballing and goal kicking in a fun and engaging way! Thank you to AFL Victoria for an engaging program! Have a look at some action pictures.

This week in Prep…

We have just crossed off our 67th day of Prep! 67 days of building new friendships, making discoveries and extending our learning! The countdown continues to our 100 days of Prep festivities!

What a fabulous week in Prep we had this week…

It was wonderful to see so many faces at the Open Night! The Preps were super excited to show off their hard work and learning spaces!

Across Literacy, we, like many other schools across Australia, celebrated Simultaneous Story time to promote the love of reading. This year, the chosen text was, ‘Family Tree’. We discussed the text and the messages the author is trying to convey to their audience, which tied in nicely with our learning intention to understand the author’s purpose.  The children then took pride in creating their own family portrait. We continued our new Writing model, brainstorming words from a picture prompt and then using our brainstormed words in sentences across the week before publishing a final piece. This model helps in creating predictability, setting children up for the success that they deserve! Our SMART Spelling sentence this week was ‘I like her hand’, with our focus word being, ‘hand’.

Thursday was National Sorry Day, a day of remorse, healing and acknowledgment of the trauma and loss that continues to affect Indigenous communities, families, and individuals. Today, Friday, is the start of Reconciliation Week. We combined our SMART Spelling experience with creating a piece of artwork, highlighting the important message, ‘Be Brave. Make Change.” The Preps traced their hands to use as part of a display, making a pledge that we will be brave and discuss the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make positive change for the benefit of all Australians, creating a brighter future for all.

In Maths, we pressed the pause button to revisit maths concepts and to cement and measure our learning. We established understanding of the language and processes of counting by naming numbers in sequences, initially to and from 20, moving from any starting point. We also revisited subitising and matching numbers to quantities.  We achieved this through game-based activities, teacher conferences, worksheets, and our good friends, Pevan and Sarah.

What mature, in-depth conversations we had in Inquiry this week. Previously, we have been investigating the impacts certain weather events have on our environment. This week, we moved into discussing climate change. It was heart-warming to see so many children having prior knowledge in this area, passionately engaging in conversations to help make change, “We have an electric car because our red one uses too much petrol which is not good for the environment.”, “We grow a lot of our own vegetables to eat.”, “We have a worm farm because our plants like worm wee, it makes them grow better.”, “I brush my teeth in the shower to save water”. A little change can go a long way.

Have a happy and safe weekend, we cannot wait to see what week 6 has install for us!

Love from,

The Prep team 😊

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Dear Grade 1/2 Community,

What a wonderful week it has been! So much learning and fun happening in our Balit Space. On Wednesday night we had our Badger Creek Primary School Open Night, where many visitors came through our learning environment and they explored our displays and learning that has been happening within the past few weeks. Our theme is ‘A little bit different’, so our students had the opportunity to listen to a text and then show their creative side by designing their own unique ‘ploofer’. There are photos attached of our ploofer walls in our Balit Space and students getting creative during the lesson.

In Reading this week we have been looking at the strategy of Summarising a text. Identifying the most important parts of a text and then summarising in our own words. Have a go at Summarising a book tonight and remember not to give away the whole story.

In Writing for the next two weeks, we will be exploring the power of persuasive writing. Students will have the opportunity to form opinions on topics, create arguments to back up their opinion and have a go at writing a persuasive letter.

In Mathematics, students have been practicing Mental Computation through doubles, near doubles and friendly numbers. Through fun learning experiences, students have been practicing counting on, counting backwards and using their knowledge of mathematical equations to help solve a problem.

Can you complete the below mathematical equations in 20 seconds or less?

5 + 5 + =  ?

2 + 3 = ?

50 + 50 = ?

11 – 10 = ?

Just a quick reminder, as the weather gets colder, don’t forget to bring your school jumper or jacket everyday!!!

Have a wonderful week,

The Grade 1/2 Team 😊

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

Well, we’re past the half-way point of the term and the learning just keeps on rolling in Grade 3/4.

We’ve had a lot of fun continuing to explore our Inquiry topic of Night and Day, with our learning this week focusing on shadows. Students have been fascinated to explore how their shadows change throughout each day. After playing a game of shadow tiggy – which is harder than it sounds – we traced our shadows on the basketball court in the afternoon and measured them. We were hoping to repeat the process the following morning, so that we could see the difference, but sadly the sun was obscured by clouds. In any case, we had rich discussion of what we would have seen, which gave us a great understanding of how the height of the sun in the sky impacts on the length of shadow our bodies cast. Hopefully you had a chance to see our traced shadows on the top basketball court – if you didn’t, there are still some remnants that have resisted being washed away.

In writing, our children have busily crafted a narrative, with a focus on having a clear problem that their characters are seeking to solve. Students have worked through the entire writing process, beginning with the planning phase, before writing a draft, editing and revising their writing, and in most cases, publishing their narrative to share with their audience. Well done to those students who built tension in their story but having their characters try unsuccessfully to resolve the problem, which in many cases led to new problems. We have some particularly creative kids in our year level, and a few aspiring authors too.

Finally, a big thank you to all of the families who were able to stop by the classroom on Open Night. We were so pleased to celebrate the incredible learning our students have completed this year. One of the activities we ran in the 3/4 area was a shared piece of writing, where families were able to contribute a sentence to a collaborative story titled – Roxy, Jeremy and the Haunted House. Please find a photo of the scroll attached. Enjoy the read – it really takes a few sharp turns!
