Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

The time has come to reflect on the last 10 weeks. I must say they have been at times very challenging, but overall I am going to say very successful. Let me share what I think are our top 5 successes for term 1 2022…

5.We had a successful ¾ camp that helped students develop independence and take risks. Covid kept away during the camp which meant that our kids could all get the full experience. Bring on the 5/6 camp at the end of the year!

4.Campfire Conversations. We have been having some great conversations with many people over the term around reconciliation. We have listened and now there are some things that we really want to explore and try to change to ensure that Badger Creek is a culturally safe and inclusive space for the Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander folks of our community. A big shout out to Rohan and Angela for their hard work in this space.

3.Response to Intervention. This was our work for term 1 and I am so proud of all of our teams for supporting students with their learning. Most teams have entered the learning data in and have been able to celebrate learning growth. I want to give a big shout out to all of the students involved in RTI’s, you have worked so hard and should be very proud of your learning growth.

2.The PFA. We have a fabulous team being led by Michelle Overend. Already they have started to organise events and memory making moments for our community. If you are interested in joining the team let us know and we can connect you with Michelle, Kylie or Rachael, who will be more than happy to let you know how you can help.

1.Our students! Having 2 disrupted years of learning, our students have been our biggest success this term. They have shown stamina, tried their best and have made learning growth. What an incredible group of people I am so proud to be their principal. Thank you to all of our kids for being the best that they can be!

Photo catch up day

For those students who missed out on photo’s this week, we will be hosting a catch up session on Friday the 19th of April. We will remind you that week too. If you need sibling photo’s these can be taken then too.

Just a reminder to come and collect your box of RAT’s for the first 2 weeks of term. The testing will continue 2 days a week. We ask that all students are tested on the morning of Tuesday the 26th of April to ensure that we limit the spread of covid.

Finally as we finish off the term, I want to thank you all for your support and wish you all a very Happy Easter. I can’t wait to see everyone back in term 2 safe and rested.

Stay curious,

MUSIC

Greetings Badger Creek Community,

This week in music our grade three to six students created some of their own music on the ipad app, Garage Band. We also has some lovely senior school helpers in our prep classes this week. A big thank you to Huxley who gave us a beautiful piano concert. What a great audience our prep students were!

Have a great break,

This week in Art…

What a wonderful term we have had in the BCPS art room! The students have all been focusing on printmaking and drawing and have used a range of different techniques including monoprinting, foam relief-printing and Gelli plates to create beautiful artworks. The artwork is on display in the office and the hallway outside the art room. Please come and have a look and celebrate the achievements of our very talented students.

Next term we will be focussing on painting and drawing across all year levels and I will be introducing the students to a range of new painting techniques.

Enjoy your holidays and we look forward to another term of creating and making.

This week in PE…District Athletics

A very big congratulations to all students who participated in the District Athletics Carnival this week.

You were amazing role models for our school competing against other schools and should be very proud of yourselves.

This week in Prep…

As our Preps like to sing: “It’s Friday then, it’s Saturday Sunday – WHAT….”

….What, holidays already?!

We have tried our absolute best to squeeze in as much celebration this week as possible because, let’s be honest, these preps deserve it!!

We have been reading for enjoyment, looking at the different sounds the digraphs ai, ng and ee make, and practising forming our letters correctly.

Of course we like to sprinkle in a bit of fun, so we:

-thought about the books we enjoy reading and why, before choosing a book to read to the Koalas at The Sanctuary

-used our magic fingers to trace letters on our friend’s backs and build the letters out of concrete materials before having a go at writing them the correct way

-made ‘Easter Bunny tails’ and paraded them around the school (Ms Preece was super impressed when we bypassed her office)

-had a go at creating ‘tree portraits’ seen out in the yard

-followed a guided drawing of a ‘king’

In maths we explored capacity. We identified containers which were either full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty or half full.

We were so surprised when the Easter Bunny made a special trip to help us with our learning of capacity. She left us a letter and some chocolate eggs, which we used to fill different sized containers. We were shocked to see that what looked to be the ‘smallest’ container had the largest capacity as it held ALL the eggs. While the taller, skinnier container held MOST of the eggs. We learned that we need to consider the width as well as the height before predicting which container holds more.

A special shout out to the Easter Bunny for sneaking back into the classroom during our focused learning time, taking back the easter eggs and using them to create an easter egg hunt on the playground for us. The phone call to Mrs.  C announcing this surprise was pretty magical.

We are assuming that as your reading this newsletter, the preps are fast asleep on the couch after an extremely successful day of discoveries at the Sanctuary yesterday. The children were able to tick off 18 out of 20 animals off their checklists! This equates to approx. 11,000 steps! (we checked Miss H’s watch).

Hence the tired preppies! A big thank you to Barb (Miss H’s Mum) Kristy B , Kristy S  and Ashleigh P for helping out over the day.

Just a little reminder for anyone who may notice they’re missing a school jumper over the holidays- we have our (growing) lost property basket outside our classroom.

Have a wonderful Easter and a safe break, Team Prep!

We are so excited to pick up from where we left off in a couple of weeks.

Love Mrs C & Miss H

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Dear Grade 1/2 Community,

What a busy and exciting term it has been! We are amazed at the hard work and flexibility our grade 1/2 students have displayed throughout the course of the past couple of weeks transitioning into our new Balit Space. Well Done to all!

This week in Reading, we have been focusing on non-fiction text features. The students had the opportunity to explore their own just fit books and find different text features.

This week in Writing, we have been exploring Information Reports and their features. We have looked at things like headings, facts and labels that we may find in different Information Reports. Students have been working very hard to complete their Family Tree Information Reports in preparation for our big event after school on Thursday.

This week in Maths, we have been learning about Subtraction and how to use visual strategies to help us solve a range of subtraction problems.

Below are some images of our Balit Space and students working beautifully during learning time.

Reminder… Last Day of Term 1 is Friday the 8th of April and first day of Term Two is Tuesday the 26th of April!

Have a great holiday and Happy Easter!

The Grade 1/2 Team 😊

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

CAMP SUNNYSTONES

The 3/4 students enjoyed a fantastic camp last week. It was a busy three days full of adventures and started with an hour and a half hike into the camp. Our kids enjoyed exploring the 7 acres of bushland in activities such the Survival Game and Geocaching. Dave Clingin (our camp guru) shared some fun campfire songs and we even belted out our favourite sea shanty ‘Wellerman’. There were many children whom camp was the first time they had stayed away from home and family. It was wonderful to see their resilience and the care and support from friends who helped them through the two nights. A  huge thank you to our parent volunteers Mark Morris and Matt Hart for coming with us and supporting teachers and students. Here are some personal reflections from some of our students.

What was your highlight from camp?

“I would say..bow and arrow shooting was cool!”

Tasman

“I liked archery a lot because it was my first time shooting an arrow and I got it into the hay.”

Finn

“Being able to sleep in cabins with Finn and my other friends. It was my first time away from my family for that long.”

Flynn

“Survival game because it was just super fun!”

Milo

“I liked hut building cause when it was the end we got to collapse the sticks that were holding up the door.”

Sarah

“I liked the games like survival game. We got to be in teams and hide from other players.”

Emma

“I liked the survival game because you get to run around the bush and get to kill other creatures. I was a human so I had to kill herbivores and carnivores. I couldn’t kill germs.”

Harry

“I liked hut building cause we all got wet.”

Alba

“I really enjoyed canoeing, even Annabelle and I were saying STOP to Evelyn because she was trying to capsize the boat”.

Sanne

“The bush cooking, cos I thought it was cool how you can make things out of scraps in the bush. We made choc orange puddings with the half orange peel and special chocolate pudding mix.”

Mika

“The hut building. It was fun.”
Audrey

We wish all our families a safe and happy Easter break and look forward to seeing you refreshed for term two.
