Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

We have reached the end of week 2 and it’s been great to see so much learning happening. With Smart Spelling up and running in classes, the readers and writers workshop and all of our specialist subjects starting our students have really hit the ground running.

I am hoping you can mark a day in your diary. Monday the 21st of February. There are a few things going on that day. The first event for that day is the Welcome Morning Tea for our families (particularly our prep and new families), this event is an opportunity to come along and meet other parents within our school community. Tea and coffee will be available as well as a sweet treat to get your day started. The morning tea will start at 9am and you will find us all at the Yarn Circle near the front office.

The second event on Monday the 21st of February will be our 3 way interviews. These interviews are an important opportunity for you to get to know your child’s teacher and share information that will help make learning better for your child. Our specialist team will also be available to book interviews this year. You will be able to book appointments on Compass over the next week. These interviews will be held from 3:45pm-8:30pm via WebEx. If this day doesn’t suit please reach out to your child’s teacher to see if there is a more suitable time. Unsure how to access Compass? Pop in and visit Brogan or Mel at the office, they will be able to help you.

While your diary is open I have some more dates to pop in your calendar, we have our assembly dates set for the term. Due to covid restrictions we have minimised the large whole school gatherings. Jen Legg and I have worked out ways to ensure we can safely meet as a whole school to celebrate learning. Families are welcome to join us at these events too. Thursday 3rd of March at 9:30am, Thursday 24th of March at 9:30am and Friday 8th of April at 1:30pm (School finishes at 2:30pm that day for school holidays). For some extra days to remember Labour Day is on Monday the 14th of March and we have a curriculum day on Monday the 28th of March (Students are not required onsite for learning on these days).

I cannot finish this weeks newsletter without introducing you to the team… As I mentioned last week, we have been so grateful to be able to pull together an amazing team of educators to work with your child/ren. So let’s meet them…

Our prep team are Sarah Hubbard and Stephanie Connell.

Our ½ team are Rohan Anderson, Vanessa Saffin, Stephanie Krueger, Lacey deManuele and Jessica Riley.

Our ¾ team are Andy Moore, Kat Douglas and David Clingin.

Our 5/6 team are Erin Murphy, Matt Johnstone and Alyssa Drill.

Next week we will have the rest of our teams introduced, that’s the specialist team, the education support team and the admin team.

We are very excited to be working with all of you this year and hope that you always feel comfortable to come and talk to us about your child’s learning.

Don’t forget to come and collect your next set of Rapid Antigen Tests from the office.

Have a lovely weekend.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in Prep…

What another fantastic week in Prep! This week, the preps were so excited to spend some time with their Grade 5 buddies. It was wonderful to see the relationships being built between the two cohorts. The grade 5’s have been an excellent support to the preps as they settle into the school routine.

We had some special visitors join us this week for a picnic, our teddies! In phonics, one of the letters/sounds we investigated this week was the letter ‘T’. To support the children’s learning, we invited our teddies along to school with us. After each sound. During reading, we have been using our magnifying glasses to search for our specific focus sounds in texts.

In math’s, we have been working on counting to 20, our number recognition and being able to order numbers in correct sequence. In writing, we have been focusing on our writing moving from left to right across our page while using our phonics sound charts as support to identify the starting sounds of words.

This week, we sent home the children’s learning folders with them. Inside the learning folders, you will find take home books, a reading log and our Smart Spelling words. Please support your child by ensuring they bring their learning folders with them every Monday to swap over their books for the week 😊

Reminders:

  • Could you please ensure that you have returned your child’s School Nursing forms. The Nurse will be visiting us on Monday 28th February and Tuesday 1st March.
  • Body Safe Parent/Carer Workshop Thursday, 24th February, 6.30-8.30pm.

Love Mrs. C, Miss H. and Miss V.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

What a fantastic week we’ve had! We’ve begun ‘Take Home Reading’ and children are showing pride and care for their books, diaries and satchels. Thank you to all our families for helping our students pack their satchel. This week also saw the beginning of SPECIALIST CLASSES!! YAY! Our children merrily joined in with Music, Art and P.E. Thanks to our wonderful Specialist teachers for making our first classes so special!

A ‘heads up’ that our Library sessions start in W3 and will be on Thursday (Miss Demanuele and Ms Krueger) and Friday (Ms Saffin, Mrs Riley & Mrs A). Please assist your child to pack their library bag and any books they may still have from 2021. 🙂

This week in Reading, we have been focusing on Read to Self, Read to Someone and Listen to Reading. We also had the opportunity to work with iPads and to utilise our CAFE Book Boxes that hold our carefully selected, ‘Good Fit Books’. Next week, we are focusing on introducing our Reader’s Notebook, helping us to show evidence of our learning, as well as exploring critical reading strategies including ‘Check For Understanding’ and ‘Cross-Checking’.

In Writing, we collaborated to create our Welcome to Country (see our photos for some 1/2D drafts and our published copy). We also gathered Writing inspiration including pictures from magazines and hit the ground running with Smart Spelling – our favourite!! Next week, we are focusing on building our wrist strength and improving our pencil grip, as well as exploring the Writing Process including planning, drafting and editing. We kindly ask that students bring in an artefact from home next Monday, as inspiration for Writing! 🙂

In Maths, we’ve been exploring Place Value with varied materials including blocks, dice and cards. We learnt a fun Maths game called BUST – ask your children to teach it to you! Next week, we are working on ‘Time’ including calendars, duration and sequencing events.

In Inquiry, we are beginning a unit of work on ‘History’ through our topic ‘Identity’ that explores our local history and community. We are giving our students the opportunity to voice what they already know and what they’d like to know, and will base our planning of these findings.

We can’t wait for an exciting Week 3 and wish everyone a safe and happy weekend!

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

Thank you to all our 3/4 students for making it such a terrific start to 2022.

Over the past two weeks, students have shown just how adaptable they are when it comes to learning. We have thrown them into new routines and rigorous learning and feel such pride in how they have stepped up. Setting expectations has been our priority as we develop workshops for Reading, Writing and Maths.

Next week, we look forward to beginning our curriculum, including the following:

SMART Spelling –  /se/ as in horse

Reading – Schema i.e. Making connections to your own experiences (Text to self.)

Writing – Ideas. Creating and sprouting ideas to write about.

Maths – Place Value to 3,4,5 digits and beyond.

Check out some of our learning recently

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

What a start the Grade 5/6’s have had to 2022!

It has been a busy two weeks getting back into the swing of learning and revisiting our school and classroom expectations.

We have focused on being respectful, showing acts of service, working collaboratively and recognising other people’s emotions. We have learnt about empathy and how we can respond when people need help.

In literacy, we have been setting up our Reader’s and Writer’s workshops, choosing books that challenge us and bring in artifacts that are special to us to inspire our writing.

In numeracy, we have been exploring the Mathematicians Tool Shed, choosing the most efficient strategy for a problem.
