From the Principal

It is getting to that time of year again. Next Tuesday afternoon is our very first transition session for 2022. We want the kids to have the surprise of meeting the learning teams first (You will be able to find out your child’s learning team in the next newsletter). At this stage they will not be placed into grades yet, we will be exploring groupings of students and seeing how they work best. For the remainder of the year, on a Tuesday, students will be able to meet up with their 2022 classmates.

Grade 2/3 sleepover

A reminder that we will be hosting the annual sleepover on Thursday the 2nd of November. We are so glad that we are able to run this program again for our students. It is great preparation for the ¾ camp which will run from the 2nd to the 4th of February. Please check on Compass for more details.

Camps in 2022

For those of you who have kids in grades 3/4/5/6 in 2022 get ready for a few quiet nights in February. That’s right, we have school camps for our students in grades 3-6 from the 2nd to the 4th of Feb. Our Grade ¾’s will be heading over to Sunny Stones Camp in Broadford and our 5/6’s will be enjoying time on the city camp. Camp information will be coming out very soon so keep a look out on Compass.

Candlebark Farm

On Monday our 5/6 students enjoyed a team building day out at Candlebark Farm. It was a great opportunity for our students to reconnect with each other and their teachers. Some of the highlights were the GAGA ball pit (we think we need to build one for the school) and also the low ropes. It was nice to be able to offer this day for our students considering how much they have missed out on over the last 2 years. A big thank you to Edwina Whiteside and the 5/6 team for making this event happen. A special mention goes out to all of the parents who did the drop off and pick up from the camp, we appreciate your flexibility.

That’s about it for this week.

Till next week, stay curious,

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in Art…

This week in art students have been working diligently on their various projects, exploring mediums and processes that include collage, screen-printing and sewing.

Our preps have just completed their underwater collages inspired by Eric Carle’s book Mister Sea Horse. They used tracers to draw a seahorse, starfish and seaweed out of their painted paper that they created last week. They have really developed their cutting and tracing skills which is evident in their final pieces.

The grade 1/2 cohort finished off their Pablo Picasso inspired rooster artwork. They learnt about foreground and background in a painting composition and how to draw a horizon line to create the ground and the sky. They explored the art principle value, by learning how to mix a tint by adding white to a colour and then painted their background with that tint.

3/4 students this week have been continuing to learn about The Day of the Dead celebration. They cut out skulls and other decorative features from felt and will begin to sew these into place next week.

Our grade 5/6 students are working hard on designing a 4-colour screen print of their choice that they will print onto fabric. They have designed a range of images from video game characters to flowers. Most have began cutting out their stencils and hopefully next week, we’ll see some of these printed.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

This week was our second and last week of gymnastics. We worked on animal shapes this week. There were bunnies, crabs, bears, sloths and lots more animals completing the gymnastics circuit. It was a great experience for the school and students.

MUSIC NEWS

END OF YEAR CELEBREATIONS

As we will be unable to hold a school concert again this year, we have decided to create a whole school video, in which we will all do the same dance on the basketball court to the music Keep on Moving, by Five.

Thanks to the generosity of the Tasker family, we will have a drone to film the dance and will also take other camera angles and make a magic edit! Unfortunately parents will not be invited to the live event.

As part of our celebration, the PFA will arrange a sausage sizzle and ice-cream snack we will play some music through the speakers and have a party! This is a free event. We just want everyone to celebrate together.

This will take place at 1.15 on Thursday 9th December at 1.15pm. I have included the dance demonstration video here for your interest.

Your child will need to be in full school uniform, Santa hats or other Christmas decorations to uniforms are welcome.

SCHOOL BAND NATIONAL ANTHEM VIDEO

Last week our wonderful school band undertook to record the National Anthem to use in assemblies when we are unable to play live. I am so proud to be the teacher of these young musicians. Their commitment to high standards and achieving a great musical outcome is impressive. We have had so little time to meet this year, yet they have achieved so much. Well done School Band. You make us all proud.

Have a great week,

This week in Prep…

Our Preps had such fun writing this week. We wrote about:

  • Our favourite features
  • Our teacher, the beach, a feather and a fork
  • Morrie (our visiting guide dog puppy), a frog, an ant and a car

We even created our very own high frequency board games!

In maths we have been learning about capacity, we had fun playing with water and working out what hold more and less.

  • We filled jars full, half full and left some empty
  • We also used unifix to work our which containers could hold the most

Ask your Prep ‘Who Sank the Boat?’

This week is our last chance to borrow books from the library, please return all library books early next week.

We know our kids are feeling a bit tired but please praise them for the wonderful effort they are putting in at school.

We are all very proud of them!

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

What a wonderful week in grade 1/2! In reading, we honed in on our reading goals and stamina. In writing, we stretched ourselves to write about a variety of topics in a variety of ways. In maths, we began looking at shapes. Did you know that when you flip, slide or turn a shape it changes!? We are also continuing our work to get ready to build our toys, we are so thankful to those who have been able to bring in materials to support us in building our toys next week!

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to all our amazing families, it has been another busy week for the Grade Five and Six students.

We started the week with a special excursion to Candlebark Farm where students revisited some of our key values of respecting one another and working collaboratively with others. We also explored the concept of peer pressure, and how we could use this collaboratively to help ensure that everyone at our school could be encouraged and supported to make the right choices. It was amazing to see all the students supporting one another learning through trial and error. Many thanks to Charlie and company for their assistance on the day.

For reading this week, we have been working on applying a variety of strategies to help improve our comprehension. Students have been demonstrating their abilities to form their responses using full sentences which include evidence from the text, as well as challenging themselves to identify which strategies they’ve used to respond to various question prompts.

In writing, students have been working exceptionally hard on drafting and publishing picture story books for some of our junior students. It has been a challenge for some of us as writers to change our writing style to suit the needs of a younger audience, however we have seen so many examples of students rising to the challenge. We can’t wait for the opportunity for them to share their work with some of our younger students at the end of the term.

In maths, we have focused on developing our knowledge of Cartesian points, and how to use plot points as a sequence of instructions to create images. These instructions will be used by student’s peers to try and create the same image, we’re looking forward to seeing the results and how closely these match with the original designs.
