Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

I am feeling grateful this week. This week I had less meetings than usual. This meant that I could go and visit so many lessons this week. It is always my favourite thing to do, because it is so nice to watch the explicit teaching and then talk to the students about their learning. Some of my highlights from this week has been watching Smart Spelling, seeing our students learn about angles and chatting about books that are being read. If you fancy having a look too (and you’re double vaccinated) come and do a learning walk with me. Ring Brogan at the office and she will pop you in for a tour.

Victorian High Abilities Program (VHAP)

A big shout out to our VHAP students this year who have been studying maths this year. The program is for selected students in years 5 and 6 based on NAPLAN results. This year Harper D, Jarrah T, Layla M, Olive B and Alexandra R have been completing weekly tasks. It takes a lot of persistence and self-motivation from these students and we are very proud of them for trying their best.

Next year we are able to offer VHAP in english and maths. We will announce these students early in the new year.

A big thankyou to the parents for supporting our VHAP students, Erin for providing afterschool support for some of our students and Edwina for organising the program.

Candlebark Farm/ Respect Day

On Monday the 22nd of November our Grade 5/6 students will be meeting us at Candlebark Farm for a day of team building. We have missed so many opportunities for our students to be able to work in an environment that encourages them to be brave and vulnerable.

We will be sure to show the photo’s of the day in next week’s newsletter. A big thank you to Edwina, Erin, Greg and Alyssa for organising the day.

Sporting school grants and sport updates

Just a little update on our sports equipment. David Pitts and Jen Hunter our dynamic PE teachers have been busy organising new sporting equipment for playtime for our kids. Already many of our kids have been enjoying these around the school.

We have also had Tri Skills come out and do gymnastics workshops with our kids. They will be back next week to help our kids learn more skills in gymnastics.

In the last week of school we have a special AFL program. A big thank you to David for always looking out for amazing experiences for our students.

I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend.

Stay curious,

Nerae

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in P.E…

We have no doubt there would have been some excited, maybe nervous students this week prior to commencing the gymnastics program run by Tri Skills. Students participated in beginning gymnastic skills, learning the important shapes in gymnastics. See if they can remember the four shapes: tall, wide, small and motorbike. There were smiles all around, between the looks of concentration, as students rotated around the activities and equipment. This program would not have been possible without the amazing organisational skills of Mr Pitts. Thank-you Mr Pitts for arranging this for the whole school.

This week in Prep…

Our Preps are very excited to be putting the final touches on their very own books. Over the past few weeks we have been reading and writing narratives. They have become experts at finding and writing about the Ooh, Aaah, Uhoh and Phew sections in stories. We have written, illustrated and edited our stories and can’t wait to share them with you! On Tuesday it was delightful to hear our Preps share the big book ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, as they put on the voices of the BIG Papa bear, the medium size Mama bear and the teeny tiny baby bear. When reading, they are working hard on their individual goals. As a group we played with our expression and fluency, we also made connections across different fairytales, it was lots of fun! Our Smart Spelling word of the week is ‘feather’, which contains 3 digraphs. We have even discussed the difference between the ‘ea’ digraph in teacher and feather as it makes a different sound. The Preps sound knowledge is ever growing and they continue to knock our socks off daily.

In Maths we have been working with counting backwards and continuing to develop our subtraction skills. We have completed subtraction puzzles, played card games and used hundreds charts to help us with our thinking.

Next week will be the final week that our Preps can borrow from the library. Once you have read your books please return them promptly to help Mrs Miller organise the books ready for the end of the year. Thank you for your support and keep up that reading!

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Wow! Another week has passed. It has been a very busy week in our classrooms. Our students are building their stamina and are doing so well to get through the whole day. We have been trying to give the students regular brain breaks between learning to help with their stamina. We suspect you may have some very tired little people in the evenings.

This week we have had some opportunities to mingle with our peers in prep and grade 3 in preparation for next year. For some students, this is super exciting and some others have found it a little worrying. It’s another change in their little lives and we are very aware some students may need extra support with the transition. Please reach out to your classroom teacher if your child has any concerns that we can support them with.

This week the 1/2’s have been getting hooked on books and showing what REAL reading looks like. We have been using our readers notebooks every day to write about the texts we are reading. It’s been a delight to share our responses which often spark amazing discussions and incidental learning from our peers.

We know our students love to write about their own experiences and this week we have seen some strong recount pieces. We are working on developing our own writing with learning goals including, using capital letters and full stops in sentences and recording the sounds we hear in words. We encourage our students to continue reviewing their sight words regularly at home to improve their writing.

In Maths, we have explored fractions and have had some fun investigating shapes that can be divided equally into halves, quarters, thirds and even eighths.

We were thrilled to receive a gigantic basket of purple sports equipment and quickly made some good use of it. Thank you to Ms. Hunter who had a very busy day with the pump on Tuesday.

Congratulations to 12C and Miss Kean who had the most blue home reading satchels returned. Please keep a look out for these and encourage your child to bring them to school every day.

Have a lovely weekend.

½ Team

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

We are so proud of our 3/4s this week. You have shown absolute dedication to your learning. Keep up the focus til the end of Term and you will achieve so many great things!

In Maths, we rounded up our unit on Angles by looking at clocks and connect time to Angles.

In Reading we have just begun our unit on inferring by looking for clues in texts (and to who has been in our classroom), our 3/4s are becoming better and better detectives everyday.

In Writing we have introduced a new writing piece ensuring we change our word choice to include and up level our words.

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Another busy week with the Grade 5/6 students as we start focusing on our end of year tasks!

In Reading, we have been focusing on strengthening our understanding of all the comprehension strategies we have learned throughout the year. We have worked on so many!

In Writing, we are using all our writing skills from the past year to create stories for some special people, drawing on our ability to write for a specific audience.

In Numeracy, our focus has shifted to exploring angles, making reasonable estimates when identifying angles, accurately measuring angles with protractors, and exploring complementary and supplementary angles.

Keep kicking goals Grade 5/6’s!

Here is a little write up about the Buddy Treasure Hunt:

The Grade 5 Buddies spent time planning a special activity to do with their Prep Buddies this week.

They spent time brainstorming and collating their ideas before they created their final activity.

They took their Prep buddy on a hunt around the school, solving riddles, playing games, and collecting puzzle pieces to find the final clue. The treasure was hiding under the Old Oak Tree!  Fun was had by all!

Hello to our Badger Creek community,

It has come to the time of year again where we need to start thinking about the years 6s graduation. We have all been discussing how we want to fundraise for our special occasion. We have chosen to sell icy poles over the next three weeks in the canteen for 50c each. We will sell them on Wednesdays and Fridays at lunch time starting from next week. Make sure you come along and enjoy the delicious icy poles!

Thankyou in advance
