From the Principal

Staffing for 2022

It is that time of year again. The time where we share what is happening in 2022. The first bit of big news is that we will have an Assistant Principal again in 2022. Through the merit and equity process Emma Griffiths applied and was the successful candidate. Emma comes with a wealth of experience in eastern suburb schools and has been working on her leadership skills since her arrival at Badger Creek. I know that she will be someone that many of you feel comfortable to reach out to when you need support.

We are farewelling Miss Kean after many years, who will be going back to study in 2022. Kathleen has been a strong advocate for sustainability and wellbeing at our school. We are truly proud of Kathleen for heading back to study and wish her all the very best for her studies.

We welcome 3 new teaching members in 2022. Ms Lacey Demanuele, who will be joining us. Lacey has previous experience in schools in the northern suburbs with a strong experience in levels 1 & 2.

Sarah Hubbard joins us after moving from Robyn Jane and working at Yarra Junction over the past 6 months. She will be joining Steph Connell in our prep team for 2022.

Matt Johnson joins us from Marlborough Primary School. In Matt’s past life he was a plumber, but found his calling into teaching where he has been teaching levels 1 & 2 over the past few years.

A few other bits of news in terms of HR…

Sean O’Neil is joining us for 3 days a week now. This is very exciting.

Joe our IT technician is going to be joining Healesville High School for a few days a week, he will be with us 1 day a week as our DET tech, but it leaves us with a 1 day a week local technician position for someone with IT experience that is looking for school hours work. If you know anyone that might be interested, give them the schools number and tell them to ask to speak to me.

Class structures for 2022

I can’t announce teachers yet, but I can tell you what is happening with grades next year…

First of all though, I better explain what is happening to our buildings…

As you know, the building works will begin somewhere around April next year. Because we are doing a new build the process should hopefully be pretty straightforward. This means that our admin building and where the current ½’s and CIRE are located will be demolished.

Early works are planned for the gym, which will be temporarily converted into 4 classrooms for the building period. This space will be given a heating and cooling system, there will be baffles installed to help reduce the excess noise in the space, and most excitingly new furniture to help us get ready for the new learning space when it is ready. The canteen will become the admin building where you can find Brogan, Mel, Emma and myself. This building has been given a woiwurrung name balit which means strong.

Our BER is remaining, this building has a woiwurrung name too, this building is called durn-durn which means mind.

Our new build, will have a learning space, this space will be called moondani this means to embrace in woiwurrung.

The location of the library, STEAM and Art space is going to be about where the current ¾’s and art room are located. For the time being this part of the school will remain through the build, and its woiwurrung name is biladoin which means enquire.

Now that our spaces have names, let me share with you where our classes are going to be located…

durn-durn– 2 prep classes and 3 5/6 classes

balit– 4 ½ classes

biladoin– 3 ¾ classes

A big thank you to our friend at the Wurundjeri Land Council, Doreen Garvey- Wandin for allowing us to use these beautiful names!

Requests for classes in 2022

Over the coming week we will be asking students to help us understand who helps them learn. We call this a socio gram and it helps us build classes. Our focus last year and moving forward is around choosing people that help us learn, Erin Murphy uses the term “Friends help/let friends learn”. Over the weekend will be a great time to talk about the students that help your child learn, so next week they can fill out their sociogram sheet.

This year we are also asking your child to give us their triad, which is 3 adults in the school that they can go to if they need to ask for help. This is a great conversation to have with your child around help seeking. It doesn’t mean that they will have these teachers next year, but it does mean that we know who they feel comfortable talking to if they need support.

If there are particular issues or preference you would like me to consider as we create the classes, please have these in writing to me by Wednesday the 17th of November. These requests will be accommodated where possible.

Rollerderby/ rollerama

Our ¾ students have done a fabulous job showing our school expectations (be safe, be respectful and be responsible) that we have decided that every Tuesday will be Rollerama for students in grades 3-6. This means that rollerblades, rollerskates, scooters and skateboards are welcome, with students who have a helmet.

We hope to let our grade prep-2 students trial this in a few weeks. We will keep you posted!

Grade 6 graduation

We are so excited to be having a graduation this year for our lovely grade 6 students! To ensure that the event is inclusive of everyone the event will be held at school for our grade 6 students only (like last year). Parents there will be a special graduation ceremony on the last day of school for you to attend. More details coming soon!

Peer Group Pressure

I have been chatting to a few parents of late that have been interested in knowing more about peer group pressure. I found this to be a really useful article to understand how to help and support your child as they move through this inevitable stage. I hope you find it useful too.

That’s enough for this week!

Stay curious,

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in the Library…

This week has been an exciting week for Badger Creek Primary.

After school each week the library has been open for our Book Fair.

There has been a lot of excitement from the students and Mrs. Miller to finally have a Book Fair back at Badger Creek.

I know there has been a lot of students and parents visiting and purchasing some very exciting books and toys.

At the moment, we have been amazed in raising in excess of $4000.

Thank you to our beautiful families for participating in the Book Fair this year.

The last night of the Book Fair will be tonight from 3.30pm (12/11).

This week in Art…

Welcome Badger Creek Families,

It has been such a long time since our students have been able to have their art lessons onsite and to be given the opportunity to use a range of art making materials. So, you can imagine the joy I felt being able to welcome back all year levels to our specialist program this week.

Inspired by Eric Carle and his book Mister Seahorse, our preps put on their smocks and got their hands covered in paint as they experimented with making their own painted paper. They focused on the art elements of line and texture creating beautiful papers that they will use as part of a seahorse collage next week.

Our grade 1/2 cohort continued an artwork they had previously started inspired by Pablo Picasso’s drawing El Coq. They applied oil pastel to their drawing of a rooster, focusing on the technique of blending and the use of analogous colours. Next week they will paint backgrounds looking at mixing colours with white to create tints.

The 3/4 classes explored the Mexican celebration Day of the Dead, and began designing their own skulls using the style and colours attributed to these festivities. Next week they will create a three-dimensional skull using felt and beads.

Finally, our grade 5/6 cohort had the opportunity to glaze their clay chameleons. They have been patiently waiting to finish this project for quite some time. I look forward to sharing photos when they come out of the kiln.

Enjoy your week

Music News

Greetings to our wonderful school community,

It is so brilliant to have the students back at school singing, dancing and making music together. We have had a wonderful time preparing for our whole school dance party. We are also preparing some music for Christmas and the end of year celebrations.

Our prep students have shown themselves to be stellar singers and dancers and are learning to sing Jingle Bells and to play the rhythm of the song on percussion instruments.

Our grade 1/2 students have been creating their own dance sequences and practicing some rhythm reading, as well as singing Christmas songs together.

Grade 3/4 are learning to play the song, Pack Rack, by Australian musician, Mal Webb. The lyrics are very funny and we have had a great time singing them!

Grade 5/6 students are creating their own remix of the Christmas classic, Jingle Bells. We have also been learning about the history of this ubiquitous carol.

Instrumental music lessons are back in full swing and we are delighted to welcome our instrumental teachers, Mima, Jared, Alan and Jamie back. They are such an important part of our community, our students are delighted!

Have a great week everyone,

Ms. Legg

This week in P.E…

It is great to be able to teach Physical Education at school again. There were smiles all round and squeals of delight as games were played and sports equipment got used for the first time in a long time! Physical Education lessons are on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, please ensure your child has appropriate footwear on their specialist day so they can safely join in the fun!

A big thank-you to Mr Pitt’s for organising lots of new equipment for the school. We will be setting up some sports equipment for each year level to borrow at play times. It will be the children’s responsibility to bring the equipment back after play to ensure it is available for others to use.

This week in Prep…

“The Preps have truly learned that hard work pays off. And this has been clear to see as they have seamlessly rebuilt their stamina for learning (and some). Speaking of, the Preps have been doing some next level learning this week…

We have been continuing our amazing efforts in Reading as we keep practising our reading goals.

Our SMART spelling word of the week was ‘teacher’. We did such a fab job at drawing our teacher.

In Maths, we delved into 10 and some more to reconsolidate our knowledge of teen numbers. We’re experts at teen numbers now! And our teen number work books prove it!!

In Writing, we have been working on our own narratives. Gosh we’re excited to share this one with you all. We won’t tell you anymore about the amazing characters/settings/plots that have been included in our stories and leave you in suspense.

Inquiry was super informative, as we discovered a few things about the different roles ‘air’ plays in force and movement. The helicopter experiment showed us that, after dropping the helicopters, the air comes up and pushes off the blades, enabling the autorotation.

That wraps up our week. We are exciting to keep the amazingness going next week. Thank you for all your care and support with our Prep Community. With tomorrow being ‘World Kindness Day’, we are reminded of all the kindness we see each day from all of you and your gorgeous littlies!”

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

How did we get to W6!! What a whirl!

This week in Year 1/2, we’ve been working on continuing to build stamina and providing evidence of our learning across all areas.

In Reading, we have used sentence stems to engage student thinking, e.g. ‘The main character felt…’ or ‘The author wrote this book to…’. We are also focused on our own CAFE Reading goals, that are displayed in our classroom settings. Check out our photos that show us ‘buckling down’ and working hard! In Writing, we’ve been working on writing in full sentences, complete with capital letters and appropriate ending punctuation. Some students are also focused on sounding out their words, writing down the sounds they hear. Last week, some students chose to write about Halloween – take a look at some of our work!

Next week we look forward to focusing on our Writing goals. We’re also pushing forward with our Smart Spelling routines. We can’t believe how much it’s helping us spell accurately and build new vocabularly!

In Maths, we’ve been showing our understanding of division through sharing. Some students have used materials such as blocks or counters to share, while others have been applying their knowlege of multiplication or showing their understanding through drawing the problem. Check out our photos! Next week, we are moving into fractions, incorporating fractions of shapes and collections.

We are excited by our Inquiry topic, as we’ve designed our own toys! We are putting a SHOUT OUT to all our families, for any useable materials you may have lying around at home, e.g. bottle tops, boxes, wool, string, ribbon etc. We look forward to seeing our designs come to life!

Please note that as part of our Curriculum, next week we will begin a Wellbeing unit on body safety. This course includes discussions about being safe, learning from your body and what it’s telling you, and words to use when we feel unsafe. Your child may come home and speak to you about these discussions. Please feel free to be honest and open with your children, as we are. If you have any questions or would like to touch base with your teacher about this unit of work, please don’t hesitate to do so.

We’ve noticed many Reading satchels are not making their way to school. We kindly ask that you assist your child to pack their satchel, everyday. This way, children are able to access books whenever they require new ones. To add a bit of fun into the mix, the class who brings ALL their satchels first, will get a class reward!!! I wonder which class can do this the quickest…

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to an amazing W7!

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

“It’s been a busy time in 3/4 this week! Students loved the chance to get their mini wheels out for Roller-Rama on Tuesday, with skateboards, scooters and rollerblades hitting the basketball court at recess and lunch. Their responsibility and care with their wheeled devices have opened Roller-Rama to senior school students, with the 3-6s getting the chance to hit the court on Tuesdays.

Students were excited to get back to a regular week and have their first specialist lessons in person for the week. The 3/4 cohort had a blast on Wednesday heading back to their music, art, and P.E.  lessons.

In reading our class goal is to build stamina. We are all working on increasing the amount of time we can sit still and tune into the book we are reading. Students have been tuning into authors purpose within the texts they are reading. Thinking deeply and answering questions such as why did the author write this, and what does the author want the reader to learn or experience? It is great to see student’s think deeper about the texts they love, and the possible reasons behind their creation.

In writing we are continuing to learn about paragraphs and the function they serve to help the reader. We have been learning how the change in time, topic, place, or person can mean the beginning of a new paragraph, and students have been encouraged to think about how they can use paragraphs in their own writing. Ask your child about TiP ToP! We aren’t talking about the bread.

Our maths unit on angles continues to be a hit, with students exploring angles in and out of the classroom. Students have been using various measuring tools to identify acute, obtuse, and right angles, with many students challenging themselves to include straight angles and reflex angles in their work.

Forces continues to be a focus in 3/4 with students this week learning about friction and the role it plays in the world around us. Students explored the importance of friction and played a game of friction tiggy.

Congratulations 3/4’s on such an amazing week. We are so proud of your hard work and getting through your first 5 days of school in a VERY long time!”

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to our Amazing Grade 5/6 Families!

It’s been a hectic week for our senior students this week as they’ve adjusted to being back in school for their first full week. We’ve been so proud of their diligence and efforts in making adjustments to learning in classroom environment again whilst negotiating their needs and expectations with their peers. Great effort Champions!

For Reading this week, we have focused our attention on the various Language Features used by authors, and why they make the choices to use these different features to impact a reader. Students have been examining these in greater detail with a view to implement these into their own writing.

In Writing, students have explored how to improve their writing through the higher order use of paragraphs to segment their work into key components and ideas. In addition to this, we have been examining Figurative Language and how students can utilise this to improve their connection with their audience.

For Maths, we have continued our focus on division and how to apply a variety of mathematical strategies using division to solve different types of problems. Students have been challenging themselves to enter The Learning Pit as they have actively worked on extending their own understanding of Division principals.

Finally, for Inquiry, we have taken a small detour this week to focus on the importance of Remembrance Day, as students have explored their understanding of the event and what it means to them.

Warmest Regards

The Grade Five and Six teaching team.

Student work

Here at Badger Creek we have some very creative students.
