From the Principal

Hello everyone,

Time is flying by so quickly. I am so excited to know that our preps, grade 1’s and 2’s will be back with us for some of the time next week. You have all been so patient and understanding. Today’s piece is going to give you the heads up on a few of the things we need your help with from next week, until we can ease restrictions. Things will be a little different, but of course that is so we can keep learning spaces safe for our unvaccinated and vulnerable students. Each year level will receive an update prior to the return of that cohort.

Pick up and drop off

All drop offs will need to be at the gate. It needs to be a quick drop and go. There will be educators waiting at the gates to support if necessary. If you feel that separation could be difficult for yourself or your child please do not hesitate to get in contact with Edwina or myself through the schools phone or email us and we will be in touch to help make a plan.

Pick up is also going to be at the gate, we are staggering the dismissal. It will be by the first letter of your child’s surname. A-K will be at 3:20pm and L-Z will be at 3:30pm. We ask that you move on quickly to free up parking for all families that need to collect their child. I know there will be a big desire to catch up with people, but maybe organise a catch up at the park instead.

Parents and other community member’s onsite

If you for some reason need to come onsite, we ask that you only use the main entrance near the office, where we can ensure that you use the QR code system to check in. We will be asking the same for all members of the public.

We are unable to offer space for volunteers supporting in the classroom just yet. But as soon as we can and you are able to show that you are fully vaccinated and willing to wear a mask at all times you will be able to support learning at our school.

Masks

Masks will be worn by adults at all times within the school. A change this time is that teachers will be wearing masks whilst teaching. You may want to let your kids know this as it is a big change. The reason why the teachers are wearing the masks is so that they can protect the students. It is another action that teachers are taking to keep our kids safe.

Preps and grade 1-2 students are encouraged to wear a mask. Grades 3-6 must wear a mask. There are going to be more details provided around this in upcoming days, I will communicate this directly to the parents of the 3-6 cohorts.

QR code check ins

These are at every entrance, however during class time we only want parents entering from the main entrance. If you are collecting your child early, we will get the child to you. Please do not go to their classroom to collect them.

If you are using the school site after hours for the facilities we ask that you check in using the code, we also ask that you also encourage the teenagers in your house to do this too. It helps keep them and our community safe.

Illness

We ask that if your child is unwell or has COVID symptoms, that you keep them home and get them tested. They can return when their symptoms are gone and there is a negative result.

If you become aware that you or your child test positive for COVID- 19 we ask that you please notify us so we can take the necessary steps to ensure that our community is safe. This information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.

Any child that shows COVID symptoms at school, parents will be contacted and the child will need to be collected in a timely manner (preferably within the hour).

I know for most of you these firm and clear processes will come as a relief, as you know we are doing everything we can to minimise any potential exposures to your child. We trust that you will support us in this so we can keep our community safe.

Looking forward to seeing our preps and grade 1’s and 2’s next week.

Stay curious,

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in Art…

Hello wonderful Badger Creek families,

This week in art students focused on design concepts, looking at the types of graphics they could apply to either a sneaker or skateboard. They used some strategies from the design process to help them develop an idea for their artwork, including brainstorming through mind maps and sketching preliminary ideas before creating a final design.

Our juniors used their favourite place, real or imagined as a starting point for their ideas while our seniors developed individual themes. Students then applied their designs to templates of a shoe or sneaker. Well done to everybody that participated in art this week, I think we have some designers in the making!

This week in Prep…

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

What an exciting week we’ve had in Year 1/2! We have been getting ready for our return to school by refreshing our memories about our routines and how we do things! Our key word this week has been STAMINA! Stamina is your child’s ability to focus independently for extended periods of time without becoming distracted or giving up. During our live lesson last Tuesday, participants practised writing for at least 20 minutes and brainstormed ways they can prolong their writing stamina including, rereading, editing and revising.

In Reading, we’ve focused on practising our 3 reading types, ‘Read to Self’, ‘Read to Someone’ and ‘Listen to Reading’ to build our reading stamina. We also collated a Home Reading Pack, just like the ones we use at school. We familiarised ourselves with the wide range of books that are available to us including non-fiction and fiction texts. We are also grateful for the vast array of online texts that are available to us, including Sunshine Online.

In Maths, we have investigated Chance through conducting experiments. We used our skills of estimation to first think about our ideas, then we tested our experiments to note our findings! We flipped coins and rolled dice to work out the ‘liklihood’ of rolling/flipping a particular face/number. Our results were fascinating!

In Inquiry, we’ve been learning all about ‘push’ and ‘pull’ and this week, we delved into the world of air. We had the opportunity to test 2 experiments involving water and paper. So much fun!

We participated in helping to name our new school buildings using traditional, wor-wurrang names. This was indeed an honour for us. We were proud of the way our students conducted themselves during this discussion, and the pride they took in completing this significant task.

Next week in Literacy, we are focusing on responding to texts in Reading, and  continuing to build upon our writing stamina. In Maths, we are learning to combine Chance and our knowledge of numbers together, in a fun game of BUST! Simple games like this one can really help to build our number knowledge including order and place value (hundreds, tens, ones).

We very much look forward to returning to school next Thursday – we CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL! We continue to thank all of our wonderful Parents and Caregivers during this time.

Love the Year 1/2 Team 🙂

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

It’s been another big week of remote learning for the 3/4 students, who have been eager to share all the amazing things they have been up to in their final weeks at home before we return to the classroom. The daily morning check-ins continue to be the highlight of our day, as we see the children connecting with their friends and having some fun with their class. It won’t be long until we can have circle time each morning in our rooms. We can’t wait!

Literacy learning this week has focused on the arc of a story – the way that tension is built towards a moment of climax, and then released as the problem the characters have faced is resolved. It’s been great to see this learning from reading sessions applied by students during writing tasks. One of the most popular activities this week was a creative writing piece where students had to respond to a prompt of being sucked into their computer. It gave students a prime opportunity to build tension as they tried to find a way back into the real world.

This week in maths we have explored the topic of money through several tasks aimed at replicating real-life situations, such as purchasing meals for a family and shopping for Halloween. It’s been great to see the students applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction with decimal numbers to calculate the cost of their purchases and expected change.

What a fantastic effort our 3/4’s have all put in this week. We’re so proud of you all and can’t wait for next week’s learning. Have a lovely weekend!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to all our Fantastic Families,

We hope you’ve all been well and coping with the challenges of returning back to remote learning.

It has been another big week for the Grade Five and Six students as we have started ramping up for a busy Term Four. For Reading, we have been focusing on how to delve deeper into texts as we look for more information and make inferences based on the visual cues we’ve picked up, as well as considering the purposes of providing information to the reader has been from of various authors. In writing, we have been researching a variety of creations and inventions through online research, and have commenced formulating some strong ideas about how to present our findings in ways which are visually stimulating and interesting to our readers.

In Numeracy, we’ve continued focusing on exploring our understanding of number through a range of multiplication activities, with students focused on cementing their skills, understanding and knowledge as they experiment with applying new strategies to solve a range of different types of maths problems. We have been really impressed by so many of our students who have demonstrated their willingness to enter “The Learning Pit” as they put themselves into difficult and uncomfortable situations to challenge their own learning growth.

Finally, for Inquiry, we have combined the research we have been doing for our Writing work with our work on considering how students selected creations and inventions have impacted society as a whole, and what problems or solutions these inventions have addressed. This Scientific Model of Inquiry is something we are continuing to explore more deeply throughout our Inquiry during the term.

On a last note, we hope you have been receiving some of the Green Chronicles through the Compass app, celebrating the amazing efforts of individual students each day. Please keep an eye open for more of these coming through each week.

Regards

The Grade Five and Six Teaching Team
