Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

Teachers have been busy making lots of phone calls or WebEx chats this week. These wonderful conversations have revived them. Every teacher has been so pleased to connect with families. If you haven’t heard from your child’s teacher they will be in touch in the coming days, you may notice that the phone calls will be from a No caller ID. If the call is during school hours it is pretty likely it will be your child’s teacher.

In week 9 there will be another opportunity to participate in 3 way interviews. These interviews are an opportunity for our learners to share their aspirations and goals for term 4. The booking system will be set up and available next week on Compass. We will keep you posted.

I know some parents have expressed their concern for children becoming disengaged in learning. We are working to arrange some different strategies to support this. You may notice that there are smaller online groups being created to provide more opportunities for kids to feel comfortable to share their ideas on WebEx.

Thank you to all of you for sharing your ideas with us, and for being patient as we try to find the “Just Right” spot for all of our families. Every family has unique circumstances and needs, we are grateful for your understanding as our teachers try to balance the needs to up to 22 children and their families in our classes. As a community we are so fortunate to have care and support as such a strong value.

Finally I want to add a BIG thank you for the random acts of kindness that have been given to us at school. We have had families baking, gifts of coffees, beautiful letters, cards and drawings. Your kind actions are making our buckets full! Thank you. It is inspiring me to do kind things over the weekend too.

Stay safe everyone,

Nerae

An invitation to become a member of the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group.

Date: Thursday 16th September 2021.

Time: 4.30 to 5.30

Where: https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/anderson.rohan.r

The school council has come to the decision that it is important for our school to create a Reconciliation Action Plan.

A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a formal statement of commitment to promote reconciliation between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A RAP demonstrates to the community that a school is forward thinking about reconciliation and committed to making positive change. Narragunnawali provides the platform to guide teachers, educators and community members through the development and implementation of a RAP. The process is flexible and can be tailored to meet the needs of the school and the local community. Click the links for more information.

As our first step, a survey is to be completed so we can set some goals and develop a vision. Please come and join us and begin the first steps of taking action towards reconciliation in education.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in Art…

Book Week is one of my favourite times of the year. Alongside all the fantastic books that I get to enjoy, it’s inspiring to see the creative ways that illustrators bring these stories to life. This week in art we have been looking at the wonderful world of illustrators and the different mediums that they use to create these illustrations including, drawing, painting, printmaking and collage.

This week in art students could choose from two different activities. Inspired by this year’s picture book of the year How to Make a Bird, students created a nature collage. Collecting a range of natural objects in different colours, shapes and sizes students constructed an image of a bird.

The second activity was to recreate your favourite book cover. Using themselves, family members and toys the students came up with some wonderful creations. Check out the attached gallery to see what they made.

Enjoy your weekend.

This week in Prep…

Dear Prep Families,

It has been a joy in catching up with you this week and celebrating the successes of your amazing children. Thank you for the support and dedication you show to your child’s education and wellbeing.

In reading, we have focused on how authors guide our emotions with their word choices and picture clues. Well done to everyone who is using the Decodable Readers Australia website. There has been an exciting increase in the amount of reading taking place. The feedback has been extremely positive and the teachers can see the fabulous progression of our student’s reading.

In writing, we have used our imaginations and been inspired by the books we have been sharing on the blog.

For maths, we have investigated 3D shapes by finding the shapes in our environment and then making them ourselves.

Please remember to put the wellbeing of your families first and find a balance between home life and school. If we can assist in any way please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help.

Warm regards,

The Prep Team.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Another wonderful week of remote learning, go 1/2’s! We are extremely proud of all of our students and their families for continuing to support and care for each other in the home school environment.

This week we have been focusing on learning how to make and use arrays in Maths. In Writing, this week, we have been working on procedural writing and students have been asked to publish their own ‘how to’ text. In Reading, we have been celebrating our love for reading by exploring a range of books written by some of the 2021 CBCA Book Week award winners such as- Felicita Sala, Bob Graham, Freya Blackwood and Philip Bunting.

Here are some fabulous examples of how to make your very own arrays at home.

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

This week in grade 3/4 it has been wonderful to see so many smiley happy faces on WebEx and engaging in our online lessons.

This week is Book Week! We have been listening to some books read by the teachers and authors of the short listed book of the year awards and diving deeper into the books and talking about our wonderings of the characters.

In writing, we have been working on revising and editing our written pieces getting them ready to publish.

In Maths, we have been working on subtraction. Working on vertical subtraction and renaming numbers when we need to move them to another column.

For inquiry this week, we have been researching what our local council does for us and the things we can go and do locally after lockdown finishes.

We are so proud of the amazing work our 3/4 students have been doing, keep up the great work!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello Fantastic Families,

We hope you are all well and managing through the challenges of remote learning. We will be conducting welfare check-ins with all families over the coming days, just to see how you are all managing with juggling all the demands of the moment.

As always, we have been amazed at the hard work and dedication shown by our sensational students as they have shown their true grit in tackling the challenge of rising to the challenge of so many learning tasks.

For reading, students have been focusing on analysing texts through the lens of cause and effect as they develop their knowledge of various Authors’ Strategies and how these impact them as readers. In writing, we have had the pleasure of listening to some amazing submissions of students speeches. Several students have also elected to submit their speeches to the Rotary Speech Contest, and we wish them the best of luck.

In maths, we have continued to examine measurement as the students have been busy working on designing floorplan ideas for the new building works for our school. We can’t wait to see their ideas and what they feel would benefit the school when they submit their work at the end of the week.

Students have also been working on expanding their knowledge of Law Enforcement in Australia, as they examine the role that different individuals and groups serve in the court system, as well as the role of Police Officers in enforcing our laws.

Great job to all our 5/6 students, you continue showing the qualities that make you the leaders of our school.

Warmest Regards

The Grade Five & Six Teaching Team
