From the Principal

This week I have lots of different things to share with you, so let’s get started…

Ms Nerole Blair is leaving

It is with sadness that we say farewell to Ms Nerole Blair today. We would like to thank Nerole for the care and support she has shown at our school for the past 2 and a half terms. I am sure you will join me in wishing her well on her future pursuits.

Book Week!

Next week is Book Week and we are about to go through “Our worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds” We will be enjoying activities everyday. We will have read aloud’s online during the day. I know that Brogan will be reading a story one of the days and I will be on at 12pm everyday to read. Keep an eye on the blog for details!

Remember that at assembly next week we will be having our Book Day Dressup so make sure you have your costumes ready for assembly next week.

LOTE (Language Other Than English)

School Council met on Wednesday night, and we are reviewing our LOTE Program (Language Other than English. We are wondering what LOTE you think is important for our community? We came up with some suggestions, but we are open to your ideas. If you could take a few minutes to complete this survey we would be very grateful. After we review the survey it will help us understand the best language for our students to be learning.

3 Way interviews

In week 9 we will be hosting 3 way interviews for you to get an update on how your child is tracking with their learning. We are hoping these will be face to face, but it is likely they will be on WebEx. If your child is on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) you will be alerted via Compass that this available to be viewed really soon. The IEP will be in draft form, with the idea that we will be able to adjust it in the interviews based on the conversation in the meeting. If you have any questions about this do not hesitate to contact your teacher.

That’s about it for this week. Till next week, stay safe.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Music News

Greetings to our Wonderful School Community,

The big news in music this week is that we have decided to make another community video lockdown number six style! We are going to create a body and basketball percussion video to go with the song, Beauty in the World by Macy Gray. We want as many people as possibly to have a go and I will edit your offerings into an inclusive school community project.

I know. I hear you say…we are over lockdowns and online stuff BUT, we think it might inject a bit of well needed fun into the situation. And it is an easy one. All you need to do is:

  1. Watch the instruction videos
  2. Chose either the basketball or the body percussion, practice a couple of times with your family or by yourself. (Feel free to add some of your own freestyle moves.)
  3. Take a video using an iPad or a smart phone
  4. Upload the video onto the learning blog using the Google Form.

I would like to get this finished to show really soon so, get your offerings done over the next week. The closing date for submissions is Friday 26th August. I can’t wait to see your moves!

You can email me on Jennifer.legg@education.vic.gov.au if you have any questions.

Have a great week

This week in Art…

As part of our remote learning art program this week, students made their own clay out of products found at home. I think during lockdown while we are all on screens more than usual, it’s relaxing and almost meditative to be able to make a three-dimensional artwork using a material that is so tactile.

I have really enjoyed seeing the range of creations that our students have made. They are such a resilient and creative group. Check out the attached gallery to see their wonderful work.

Enjoy your week

This week in Prep…

All we want to say this week is how wonderful it has been to see our students’ faces. They are our shining light in the midst of all this chaos. We are feeling grateful that WebEx allows us to start our day by ‘virtually’ connecting and learning online. While, our favourite part of our day is hearing about the different ways you overcame challenges and created happy learning spaces.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for continuously being here with us through this journey. How ever remote learning looks for you this time round, please know that you are doing a phenomenal job.

“I dreamt I stood in a studio,

And watched two sculptors there.

The clay they used was a young child’s mind,

And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher, the tools they used

Were books, music, and art.

One a parent with a guiding hand

And a gentle loving heart.

Day after day, the teacher toiled,

With a touch that was deft and sure.

While the parent laboured by their side,

And polished and smothered it o’er.

And when at last, their work was done,

They were proud of what they had wrought.

For the things they had moulded into the child,

Could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed they would have failed

If each had worked alone.

For behind the parent stood the school

And behind the teacher the home.”

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

This week our grade 1/2’s have continued to fill our buckets with their cheery faces and fantastic contributions to live lessons.

In reading, students chose a favourite author to research. It was wonderful finding out where our authors live and how many books they have written.

In writing, we investigated procedural texts. Did you know: recipes, directions and how to’s are all procedural texts because they tell us how to do something!

In maths, students got the opportunity to engage in hands on learning. They discovered how some objects have a capacity and can be filled with liquids.

Our inquiry learning led us to thinking about our personal strengths and how we can use these in different situations.

Keep up the amazing works 1/2’s!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Dear Families,

We hope you’re all coping well and finding ways to look after yourselves and support one another during the current challenges. We’ve seen the real strength and resilience of our students as they’ve bravely shared their feelings around remote learning, whilst still finding ways to keep forging ahead. We are so tremendously proud of all of their efforts.

In reading this week, we’ve been practicing comparing and contrasting different elements of texts, as well as the similarities and differences between two different texts, as students work on building their deeper comprehension skills.

For writing, students have been researching and preparing speeches which they will look to record next week, some of which may be submitted for consideration to an upcoming tournament (more details to follow on this one).

In maths, students have been exploring measurement through looking at length and area as they find creative ways to examine their understanding and knowledge.

Finally, as part of their inquiry topic, students have been focusing heavily on building up their understanding of how laws are created in Australia and have considered the underpinning values such as need and equality whilst drafting suggestions for their own new laws.

Thank you again to all our students for their exceptional efforts, as well as all our fantastic families for supporting our students in their efforts.

We are looking forward to seeing you all in the classroom in the near future.

Warmest Regards

The Grade 5/6 Teaching Team
