From the Principal’s seat

We did it! We got through another lockdown… a hard one, but nevertheless we all survived. The message from the Department of Education was really clear to me the other day, and I agree, we have to be really careful over the next 2-3 weeks in the way we act. That’s why we ask that everyone wears masks inside and outside, and we are now asking any person that enters a building (even with picking up and dropping off their child) will need to contact trace on their phone. Simple steps but it really does make sure that we can keep our kids safe. On another note, the majority of our staff who are eligible to vaccinate have done so. I was lucky to have my second dose on the first day of lockdown 5.0. I won’t forget that in a hurry!

To each of you, I want to thank you so much for the many roles you have had to play during lockdown. We have felt so relieved in knowing that you are keeping our learners safe, happy and healthy, and you’ve had a crack at helping them learn (don’t worry, I have had epic fails with my kids too!). Please be kind to yourself and remember you did the best you could with the energy and time you had. We are grateful for the energy and time you gave.

Individual Education Plans (IEP’s)

Since the start of term our learning teams have been really making time to look at learning growth for our students in reading, writing and numbers. Basically this means looking at the dots on the students reports and mapping it out on a chart. We get a little worried when we see that kids are making no learning growth. The teachers are working to put a little plan in place for all of our students, but this maps it out really well to make a good plan.

As a part of learning catch up from last year and this year we are looking at students that are 6 months behind standard in these areas, or are 12—18 months ahead of standard. These students will have Individual Education Plans written to support their catch up. We also have IEP’s for students who live with a disability, students who are in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and students who live in out of home care. This helps us co-create the goals that they need to help them be the best that they can be.

So if your child is at standard, they probably won’t be needing an IEP. They will have conferring and goal setting that meets their needs in the classroom. If your child is in one of the categories above you will receive an IEP on Compass in 3 weeks’ time, you will then have time to have a look at and then discuss the IEP at the 3 way interviews in week 9.

Compass

We have 42 out of 180 families that are using Compass. If you would like some help joining Compass please let us know. Brogan will be more than happy to help you out! Let’s see if we can get to 60 families by next week. If you are already on Compass chat to your friends and see if you can help them get onto Compass.

That’s about it for this week. Please enjoy your new freedoms safely over the weekend.

Take care,

Nerae Preece

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in Art…

Welcome back everyone! What a great relief it is to be back at school again. As we have just returned from remote learning, I have only had the pleasure of working with our grade 3/4 cohort and one class from our grade 5/6 group this week.

Our grade 3/4’s worked diligently to finish off their paintings inspired by Australian artist Hayley Mischief Lord and boy do they look great!

The grade 5/6 class worked on their self-portraits and are coming very close to completing them. I can’t wait to share the results with you next week.

In the gallery this week, I thought I’d share some finished work from a range of classes that I haven’t had the chance to show you yet. We have some really talented artists here at Badger Creek Primary School. I’m so proud of the beautiful work that they have produced.

Have a great week.

Music News

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome back to onsite music. We have all had to become so much more adaptable haven’t we? This week some of our grade 3/4 students recorded their performances that we were planning for assembly and they did a really wonderful job! Well done to those children. It took a lot of persistence and concentration.  I am really proud to be their teacher.  The recordings will be included in next week’s newsletter.

The senior school will be learning to record and compose music on the ipad app, Garage Band. We are starting with the 12 bar blues. Over the coming weeks we will be adding lyrics and melodies to our compositions. We are also leaning about the origin of the Blues and its influence of modern music styles.

I have included a video of Vedra playing along with the body percussion for Hit the Road Jack with her mum. They aced it! I have also included an original song written by Pearl and Edie that was recorded during lockdown using the Garage Band App. Enjoy!

This week in Prep…

The Preps have reentered school with hearts full of gratitude. It’s been so wonderful to watch each of the children slide straight back into their routines. And what’s better than that? Their learning has reached new lengths as they carried in with them all the knowledge that was developed during remote learning and built upon these understandings  together as a team.

But of course, we’re not surprised about any of this as today we reached 100 days of Prep.

We are absolutely feeling 100 days brighter and braver. Just take a look at us…

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

We are so excited to be back at school! Thank you to the whole 1/2 community for your wonderful efforts during remote learning 5.0.

We have been working on becoming fluent readers and we would like all our students to practice at home.  Remember you can use Sunshine Online to record your reading- www.sunshineonline.com.au

Here are some tips to help you out!

Good luck 1/2’s 😊

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

3/4s have shown resilience like we wouldn’t believe, we had so much fun creating our passion projects on remote learning and now in class we are delving deep into Fractions and Inferring. Our Writing is going to be fascinating as we continue our journey through fictional recounts (a story that happens in real life to you, that you make fantastical)

A few special people have shared with us some of the key learning that they have been doing during remote learning, including making CUPCAKES and watching the Olympics. Our students will have an opportunity to share their passion project with the class in the coming week.

Great job 3/4s for your incredible growth mindset whilst on Remote Learning, it shows being back in the classroom  and switched on!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to all our Amazing Families,

It’s been a whirlwind of a week as students have quickly adjusted to moving from remote learning to being back in the classroom with such minimal notice between both. It’s such a pleasure to see everyone again in our classrooms, rather than online and we are incredibly excited to work with students as they explore the concepts introduced to them whilst away as a large group of peers. As always, we’re so proud of the resiliency and determination shown by our senior school leaders in adapting to so many changes with such focus and courage.

In reading this week, we’ve been focusing on delving deeper into inferring what’s occurring in texts, by linking the evidence student’s find in these to their pre-existing knowledge to help them form a stronger understanding of their reasons behind their inferences.

In writing, students are continuing to experiment with conjunctions and adverbial phrases as they develop their writing through both compound and complex sentences. This focus allows students to not only link ideas together, but also build their audience’s interest through exploring dependent and independent ideas within their writing.

For maths, we have continued to support students individual needs in their various PONT groups, with each group focusing on different areas and strategies to utilise addition.

In inquiry, we are looking at the three different levels of government, the roles and responsibilities of each, and the impact each has on our every day lives through independent research with creative ways to demonstrate their understanding and learning.

Well done to all our students, and families who have worked tirelessly to support each other over the past few weeks.

Regards

The Grade Five and Six Teaching Team

One of our amazing students here at Badger Creek was lucky enough to find a 5 leaf clover.

I have been told that 4 leaf clovers are rare and lucky, but to find a 5 leaf brings the finder extra luck.

Make sure you keep an eye out around your homes and school to see what you can find.

Well done Riley on your amazing find!
