Stop.

PIVOT.

Move.

My friend sent me this the other day and it certainly helps me realise what my brain is doing. I can hear from many of you how tired and unsettled you are feeling, it makes sense, things are changing all of the time.

Dealing with disappointment can be really hard. I am sure we have all booked things that we enjoy through our weekends to have them cancelled. So how do you keep going when things look glum. Here is a little checklist of what I will be using this weekend…

  • Go for a walk with a friend and have a chat. We can leave home to exercise and we can walk with another person.
  • Eat cake. I am sure there are some recipes on the internet that will help make a delicious cake. The Ostro site always has something delicious!
  • Play Uno with the kids. They like quality time. Uno is quick and easy and lots of fun.
  • Ring a family or family member that you haven’t talked to for a while. They always help you feel grounded.
  • Do a nagging job that needs to be done around the house. Mine is definitely getting rid of the floordrobe that is building up at home.

It is important to take the next couple of days to take stock of what is happening and look after your basic needs- Are you getting enough sleep, good healthy food and exercise (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs)? Please make time to be kind to yourselves and make the most of the simple learning that kids can follow on Monday. The specialist team are putting together a creative collection of tasks for Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will resume to the blog which will be created by your child’s learning team over the next couple of days.

Remember to reach out to us if you need help and don’t place too much pressure on perfection. Practice is good too.

Hope to see all the kids back next Friday.

Take care,

Nerae

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in P.E…

1/2 PE News

It’s been a busy term on Tuesdays. I’ve been lucky enough to attend two excursions with the grade 1/2s, the most recent being the Photo Trail excursion at Maroondah Dam. The children had a great time completing a range of cooperative games and a photo trail right up to the dam wall. I was tired that evening. The children had a great day and should be proud of the way they participated.

In PE the 1/2s have finished off a range of activities and games to build their throwing skills. Next week we are going to start a unit on the skill kicking. I am looking forward to playing some mini games of soccer and footy to help practice the skill.

This week in Prep…

This week in Prep we have been focusing on our individual reading strategies. Some preps are working on pointing at the words, getting their mouth ready for the initial sounds in words, while others are developing their expression and fluency.

Our sentence of the week was “The Sun was up but it was not hot.” Our preps have been spelling ‘sun’,  along with words that have the medial /u/ sound,  along with some more high frequency words.

This week we have been busy collecting data in maths. We made tally marks, counted them and then made a graph. Ask your prep what their favourite fruit is.

On Wednesday we learnt about ‘Sorry Day’. We listened to a story and discussed it’s meaning. Afterwards, the preps coloured in puzzle pieces to create a significant image representing Sorry Day. We are looking forward to the coming Reconciliation Week.

Next weeks ‘Show and Share’ is bring an object from nature. For example, a leaf or a shell.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

This week in 1/2 we have been focusing on making and interpreting tally and pictographs in Maths. We have been working on our questioning skills in Reading. In Writing, we have been working on our planning and drafting skills.

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

It’s been another fun-filled week in 3/4 as our students have leaped into the second half of the term with their usual enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge.

Did you know that vinegar is not an ingredient of salt & vinegar chips? Well, the students of 3/4 discovered that this week, as we began exploring our new Inquiry topic of ‘Food and Fibre’. Amongst other things, our curious students are interested in finding out where our food really comes from and just how many jobs are part of the process that brings food to our pantries at home. We can’t wait to see what we discover.

Our end-of-unit deep-dive into persuasive writing is hurtling along, with children having chosen a topic important to them and setting about changing the mind of someone who disagrees with their point of view. Some of the topics selected include the need for a week-long mid-term break, a long weekend each week, greater uptake of electric cars  and the importance of having a yabby pond at school. These writing pieces are being supported by our learning in reading where children have been summarising persuasive texts, and in the process, distinguishing between important and interesting information found in these. This has helped students strengthen their arguments in their own persuasive writing pieces.

Early in the week, we completed the numeracy CAT – an open-ended problem that provided an opportunity for students to share their understanding of statistics and probability. Children have continued to work on their addition skills and are far more comfortable with the process of renaming – what most parents will know as carrying. This is an important foundation for future learning across the other three operations slated for later in the year.

You never cease to amaze us with your positive attitude and creativity, 3/4s. Keep it up you little legends. We’ll see you all on WebEx!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hi To All Our Parents,

It’s been another big week in the Grade 5 and 6 Classrooms! Students have been working hard to show us their level of understanding and abilities across a number of different areas.

For writing, we’ve been examining effective advertising techniques, and students have utilised The Writing Process to plan, draft and publish some exceptionally creative and enticing advertisements for their products as part of the ongoing Entrepreneurship Inquiry Project.

In addition to this, students have been demonstrating their comprehension abilities by discussing and delving into the deeper meanings of some texts they’ve been reading, as well as examining the effects of what they’re reading on their own world view.

For mathematics, we’ve been focusing more deeply on decimals, and their relationships to percentages and fractions.

Finally, students have been diligently working on creating their products in preparation for their upcoming enterprise fair. We’ve been incredibly impressed by their effort and resilience throughout their entire project, and are looking forward for the chance to have them display all their efforts to the wider school community.

We hope you’re all well, and are looking after yourself and each other during this time.

Best Regards

The Grade 5/6 Teaching Team
