From the Principal

I have been chatting to a few families recently about Restorative Practices. This is one of the tools that we use to repair relationships within our school. Many staff at the school have been trained to use restorative practices. Restorative Practices flips consequences for behaviour on it’s head. It moves punitive measures aside and focuses on fixing the damage caused by actions. It makes people take responsibility for their actions.

Restorative practices was utilised in the justice system in the 70’s, where mediation was set up between the victim and the perpetrator of a crime. It ended up being really successful and in many cases changed the way the perpetrator behaved in the future. But of course Restorative Practices is not a new thing, many ancient and indigenous cultures have been using this form of conflict resolution for thousands of years.

So how do we use it at Badger Creek? It is a slower process than the punitive process, where by a punishment is dealt to someone for their actions, however it has more lasting impacts. It starts with us listening to the person who has been affected by the behaviour…

We ask..

What happened?

Are you Okay?

Do you need anything?

We then speak to the person who hurt the other person…

We ask…

What happened?

What were you thinking when you…?

How have people been affected?

How can we make things better?

Once we have spoken to each person individually we can create space to bring the two people together. This can’t be forced, as the person affected needs to feel safe and ready to face the person. We use these questions to help guide the conversation. In a large portion of these situations this is a really affective way of helping the relationship. Of course there will always be a small number of students that are still learning empathy and may not have the skill set yet to work out situations using restorative practices, but we always use the elements or restorative practices to support this development.

Once again we will keep you posted with what you will need in next week’s newsletter.

Colour Fun Run

I have heard so many kids ask me this week “Can we PLEASE do another Colour Fun Run???” Monday was a cold but nevertheless such a memorable day for our students, all to raise money to help the school. We were so thankful to Julie, Jason, Jon, Chrissy and Michelle for helping out in the kitchen on the day. The fundraising is open for another 3 weeks, in that time you can help your child choose their rewards. They will be delivered early next term.

That’s about it for this week. Have a great weekend!

Cheers

Music News

Greetings to our wonderful Badger Creek families,

Music is ticking along just fine at Badger and we continue to increase the number of students who are taking part in band, choir and instrumental music lessons. The school band is bursting at the seams but I continue to try and meet the needs of instrumental players as they become ready to join in. The school choir is now up and running again and is taking place on Fridays. The uptake here is also amazing!

In the classroom, we are preparing for some upcoming performances in our school assembly on the 4th of June. We will have performances from all of the grade 1/2 students, several instrumental players and also a grade 3/4 class, TBC.

Victorian Arts Centre Promotion Videos.

As I have previously mentioned in this newsletter, due to our long term association with the Arts Centre and our particular love of the Arts, Badger Creek was asked to assist in making a promotion video to help raise money for the First Call Funding program. This program helps schools to access the Arts in many ways, in particular, our school has been given funding to take children to see performances at the Arts Centre for free!

I now have the pleasure of sharing two videos with you that some of our students assisted to make. As is the way with these things, there was hours of filming to make a 1 minute film! Thank you to the students who helped and represented our school so beautifully. Well done. Enjoy!

Have a great week,

This week in Art…

The art room has been a hive of excitement over the last two weeks as our students have been busy completing their clay work and starting new projects with a focus on drawing and painting.

Our preps have been looking at the paintings of Henri Rousseau and talking about his fascination with painting birds in the jungle. We looked closely at his work, discussing what we could see and what colours he used. They did a guided drawing of a parrot and next class they will add vibrant colours using oil pastel and a food dye wash.

The grade 1/2 cohort have finished off their pinch pot pet clay projects. They are the cutest things! Check them out in the gallery below. This week they began a painting unit inspired by the Australian contemporary artist Anya brock. We discussed how to do an observational drawing and students used these skills to draw a series of protea flowers. They will explore painting techniques next week.

In the 3/4 art room this week students have been discussing where artists get their inspiration. Students created an abstract ink-blown artwork as a starting point and then explored the book The Encyclopedia of Ugly Animals as way to generate ideas. Using black marker, they then turned their ink splatter into their own creative creature. We then discussed the concept of foreground and background in artworks and students used water-colour to paint their creature. Each artwork is unique with individual flair.

Grade 5/6 finished off their clay chameleons which are just delightful! Each student has added their own additions to make the artwork individual and the results speak for themselves. This week we began a new project on portraiture and explored a range of artists and their differing style. Students will be painting their own self-portrait in the coming weeks.

Enjoy your week everyone!

This week in Prep…

Dear Families,

What a fabulous week it has been for the preps.

The Colour Fun Run was hugely successful, and it was amazing to see all the children and parents having a great time to support a wonderful cause.

We were so excited to get on the bus and head to Maroondah Dam for the Photo Trail. Despite the mud, we had a fantastic time participating in tabloid sports and searching for the answers on the trail. A big thank you to the parent helpers. Take a look at the writing wall for some amazing recounts of the day.

In maths, we have been learning what collecting data means by exploring yes and no answers and making number tallys.

We have been learning to summarise the books we read by identifying who the characters were, where it was set and what happened at the beginning, middle and end.

For next week…

Come and celebrate our preps achievements at Open Night this Thursday from 3-5 pm.

Friday’s Show and Share theme is to bring a fun item of clothing.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

OH MY GOODNESS! What a week we’ve had in Yr1/2!

We started the week with The Colour Fun Run which was incredible! Thank you to everyone who was involved, and a special shout out to Mr Pitts for organising the event.

Then… Tuesday bought the Photo Trail to us! We were so excited to be invited to this event, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We engaged in tabloid sports and worked in teams to locate various checkpoints on our Photo Trails. Thank you to all the parent helpers – you were amazing! Take a look at our pics!

In learning this week, we have been focusing on the spelling pattern /ay/ in Spelling, Predicting in Reading, and Narrative structure in Writing (beginning, middle, end). We are continuing our work on Narrative next week and shifting to Questioning in Reading (asking questions before, during and after the Reading process). Our spelling pattern is /ar/ as in car, garden, largely).

In Maths, we have been working hard on the three most effective addition strategies; counting on, friends of ten and doubles. We are focusing on showing our working out and explaining our thinking, rather than the answer itself. Next week, we are delving into data analysis with graphing – how exciting!

We look forward to an exciting W6 – how it is already Week 6!!!

SAVE THE DATE: Next Thursday, the whole school are celebrating Education Week. We are all welcoming parents/children into our school from 3:30pm-5pm. In Year 1/2, we are learning about growing products/produce that we can build, make or design with.  Some of our fabulous parents will be speaking briefly about their role in our community and what their work entails. You may even be able to get involved in some fun activities! We look forward to seeing you – please note, the 1/2AB double learning space will be used for this celebration so please join us in Mrs Douglas and Mrs Riley’s classroom space 🙂

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

3/4 Team this week has been full of colour and adventure. Following NAPLAN the 3/4s have been finishing off planning their scavenger hunt at the Sanctuary using excellent word choice, poetry and cryptic clues to confound the challengers. In Maths we have been working on our knowledge of addition, in particular renaming numbers in vertical addition equations.

In Reading this week we have been applying our summarising skills to all different kinds of texts, including media and non-fiction texts. We are excited to see the growth and development of the students this term. You should be proud of your learning so far. Keep it up! Of course everyone’s highlight from this week was the amazing colour run!

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to All Our Senior Student Families,

It’s been another busy week for the Grade 5/6 cohort as they’ve been working diligently on building up their skills and knowledge they’ll need to successfully complete their business enterprise inquiries.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on helping students improve their grasp on decimals, including how various parts of decimals represent how which proportion of a whole number, as well as how to round decimals either up or down to the nearest hundredth. The feedback we’ve gathered from parents and students who have been working on fractions in Mathletics is that this can be a fairly confusing topic, so we’re ensuring that students have an opportunity to unpack their thinking gradually in this area.

For literacy, students have been working on synthesising information that they’re reading, as well as developing some incredibly high standards of persuasive writing pieces to demonstrate their ability convince an audience of their point of view using both evidence and emotive language techniques.

Finally, as part of their inquiry project, students are well on their way to preparing their businesses for a successful expo coming up in week seven. We’re incredibly proud of their hard work, and are looking forward to having some samples of their advertisements in next week’s newsletter.

Warmest Regards

The Senior School Teaching Team
