Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

I have been speaking to a lot of people recently and it seems to be unanimous… We all feel so busy! I wonder at times whether it feels like this because things had slowed right down last year? Maybe I am comparing to last year? Nevertheless it does make you think about the word “yes”. Maybe because we couldn’t say yes to things last year it kept our schedules fairly simple. “No” has disappeared a bit more out of my language this year… I am curious to know what is your criteria to saying “no” to things? Are you saying yes more than no this year too? If you are saying no to things, are you feeling like you have more space and time to yourself?

And now I will list some things for you to say yes to…

Colour Fun Run– We do have our Colour Fun Run, which at the time of writing this piece has already raised just over $5,445. We still have a week to collect donations! This is a mammoth effort from our families and community.

We ask that all students have paid the $10 entry fee by Monday morning. This entry fee includes lunch (Thank you PFA!) and protective sunglasses and some other goodies. We welcome families to attend and join in the fun.

Our students can be wearing their colour fun run outfits for the day, that will be a white t-shirt and some pants suitable to run in.

Next Assembly 4th of June– Save the date for our next assembly from 2:30-3:30… more awards and presentations to come.

School Photo’s– We have heard from our photographers and yes we do have school photo’s on the 26th of May. Forms for payment will be coming home to you soon. Stay tuned.

Open afternoon for Education Week – On Thursday 27th of May we will be hosting our Open Afternoon to Celebrate Education Week and Reconciliation Week. It starts at 3pm and finishes at 5pm. Afternoon tea will be provided and there will be some very special community guests coming to chat to us about how they help our community. We hope you can make it!

Bake sale– A huge thank you to all of the families that baked and supported our Bake Sale afterschool last Friday. We ended up raising just over $400! We will keep you posted with what this money will be spent on.

Bunnings BBQ– I have never seen an event come together so quickly. A week ago we were told that our Bunnings BBQ in Chirnside was going to be on the 6th of June. Yesterday, the last of the tasks and shifts were taken up by our community! That is an epic effort, thank you!

Maybe you didn’t get time to pop your name down, but you can still help! Make sure you let everyone you know that our BBQ is on the 6th of June and ask them to come and support us by buying a sausage! Let’s see if we can sell out!

Prep 2022– The final little request is for families who have siblings that will be starting prep at Badger in 2022. If you have a child who currently attends Badger and you know you have a child who is going to start prep next year we have enrolment forms ready for you to collect. The due date for enrolment forms is Friday 25th June.

That’s about it for this week. Have a hygge weekend…

This week in Prep…

Hello Badger Creek families,

It has been an amazing week of learning for the preps.

We have been busy summarizing texts and reading Good Fit Books.

The word of the week is… ‘tap’. The sentence of the week is…’This tap is on and that tap is off.’

The preps completed in a whole school common assessment task (CAT) that demonstrated their literacy knowledge.

We have continued to make tens and teens in maths. The students have been making Friends of Ten and Ten and Some More.

Next week we are looking forward to the Colour Fun Run on Monday and the Photo Trail on Tuesday.

Thank you to all the parents who have helped in the classroom this week, your contribution is making a huge difference in the learning outcomes of our students.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

1/2’s have been super busy with their learning again this week. It has been lovely to watch the students enjoy the Mentor Text ‘Miss Nelson is Missing’ and we even had a surprise visit from Ms Preece who came to teach us about searching for clues to infer- this week’s reading comprehension strategy. The students are becoming voracious readers and kicking goals with their decoding skills. Way to go 1/2’s! Next week’s comprehension Strategy is ‘Making Predictions’.

We have created characters to write about. We have used graphic organisers to help plan our writing. Next week we will be using our plan to draft, edit and revise our stories. We hope to be able to share some published writing with you in next week’s newsletter.

This week in Maths, we have really switched our brains to think mathematically when solving addition problems. The students are working on vertical addition, written organisation of the hundreds, tens and ones (units) and working from right to left to solve the problems. We are looking for students to use the language of maths to explain their thinking rather than just solving the problem. Next week, we are looking at using specific number strategies such as counting on from the largest number, tens friends and doubles to help solve addition problems.

The highlight of our weeks was a problem solving task. Take a look at our creations.

Overall, a fabulous week in the 1/2 area!

REMINDER:

  • Looking forward to the Colour fun run on Monday 17th. Be sure to wear a white t-shirt. Parents and friends are welcome to join in the fun from 2:30pm.
  • Photo Trail at Maroondah Dam on Tuesday 18th. Buses will be leaving from school between 9:10- 9:30am. Students will return to school by 2:30pm for the usual 3:30 dismissal. Please ensure students have a full rubbish free lunch. We are still looking for parent helpers for the day, so please let us know if you can assist by Monday.

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

What a week we have had!

The Grade 3’s have been busy with NAPLAN and the Grade 4’s have been working on a dodecahedron book report, Maths multiplication and addition fluency games and Co-operative learning.

Our Writing topic is extending our Persuasive skills and in Reading we are building on our comprehension skills. We have also had a couple of information talks being shared.

In the field of Community and Wellbeing, we have been building a Tower of Feetza with shoes (in small groups), and outdoor cubbies together (in slightly larger groups), in order to build trust, respect and sharing/turn-taking capabilities. The children and staff have really been having a lovely time, laughing and helping each other. This has been energising and rewarding to be a part of.

Hopefully, the children are coming home each day with a new story to tell of their adventures.

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hi to all our wonderful families,

It’s been a week filled with some really big challenges for our Grade Five and Six students this week.

Our Grade Five students have been working their way diligently through their NAPLAN testing throughout the week, and have demonstrated real resilience and grit throughout the four demanding sessions as they’ve pushed themselves to achieve the very best of their abilities. We’re incredibly proud of all of their hard work, and hope that they’re looking forward to some well-earned rest this weekend. Also a very big and special thank you to Ms Drill for all her efforts in ensuring the process has run as smoothly as possible for all students.

Meanwhile, in the classroom the Grade Six students have been focused on improving their knowledge and ability in producing high-standard persuasive writing pieces in preparation for creating their advertisements for the upcoming business expo. In addition to this, they’ve been working on solving some fairly demanding maths problems as a group, with many finding new and innovative solutions to practical mathematical problems.

We are extremely proud and impressed by all the dedication and leadership qualities demonstrated by our senior school students throughout the week, and hope that they can spend some time enjoying a bit of rest and recouperation this weekend.

Warmest Regards

Ms Murphy, Ms Drill and Mr Miller
