Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

We have nearly knocked the second week over and I must say that there is so much learning going on everywhere I look! I am making a bit of a guess that some of our families with 5/6 students, might be hearing a lot about business. We have something to look forward to in May that our 5/6 learning community are hatching… but for now I will let them build the tension and excitement.

Calm start

A couple of people have been asking about the Calm Start from 8:45am. We invite students to come straight into class from 8:45am rather than playing before school. The students choose a mindfulness activity to start their day in the classroom. The teacher in this 15 minutes makes time to check in with their students. It creates the transition space for students to be Ready for Learning at 9am. What have we noticed since Calm Starts have started? That learning has started by 9am, classrooms are a lot calmer, especially for our students who thrive on routine, we also have happier kids who are not dealing with issues from before school problems with their peers. We thank you for your support in encouraging your child in engaging in this important time before the learning starts.

Athletics Day

Today our students in grades 3-6 will be heading down to Mt Evelyn to participate in athletics. Mr Pitts has offered our students plenty of practice so they are ready to participate. We have around 120 kids attending, which shows great participation. We want everyone to have a go! I know we will have more news to tell you next week at assembly.

Assembly

Our first assembly for the term in next Friday the 7th of May. Our lovely PFA members will be setting up a Bake Sale outside of the assembly. Assembly will start just after 2:30pm (please bring a mask, but masks will be available if you forget). We will be having some awards, performances and news from our students. Hope you can make it!

School tours

I am really encouraged by the eagerness of so many families to come and visit our school. If you know anyone that has been wondering about school tours please let them know there is time to come and visit. We are also offering an Open afternoon in education week. Advertising will be coming out shortly for this, in the meantime save Thursday the 27th of May from 3-5pm… I know your students will want you to come and do a tour of their learning too!

That’s about it for this week. Have a great weekend…

IMPORTANT SCHOOL DATES

Important school dates to remember:

School Assembly and Bake Sale – 7th May

School colour run – 17th May – 2.30pm

AROUND THE GROUNDS

This week in P.E…

Did you know that physical activity not only contributes to children’s health, but also their well-being? Physical activity helps children with their confidence, to sleep well, to concentrate better on tasks and learn to participate positively with their peers.

Here is a little physical activity you could try at home with your family.

Set up a line of pillows on your floor, and have your child walk from one end to the other. It may sound easy but their balance will be challenged!

Grade 1/2s

This term the grade 1/2s will be working on skills to help them throw, kick and jump. We will be playing lots of games, learning to cooperate and be a part of a positive team. There is lots of fun to be had!

Colour fun run!

We are excited to announce that we have booked our Colour Run 4 Fun for Monday 17th May and invite all parents and children to participate !

Stay tuned for more details to come!

This week in Art…

I’m so excited to share with our families the first completed section of the art club mural. It’s located on the outside wall of the art room and I encourage you to come and have a look. It’s really fantastic! A big shout out to our art leaders Ava and Olive who have organised and run this project. The art club have been working diligently every Monday lunchtime to prepare and paint the wall. They have done such a wonderful job and the results speak for themselves. Well done to everyone that participated. The art club has involved students from grades 3-6 for this project, but will be open to all students when the next project begins.

This week in the art room all classes have been working with clay. Using a range of techniques including making slabs, coils and pinch-pots, students have been constructing a range of artworks.

Our grade 5/6 cohort have begun construction of a chameleon sitting on a leaf. They have finished the leaf, and the body, including the curled tail and they will continue with the head and other details in the coming weeks.

Grade 3/4 created flower bowls which are now drying and waiting to go into the kiln. Students used different materials like lace and clay stamps to make marks in their clay. They then constructed petals and leaves out of these pieces of clay and put together their flowers.

In the Grade 1/2 classes this week, students had their first clay lesson for the term. They experimented with a range of techniques and processes that will be used to construct pinch-pot pets during their next class.

Our preps have finished making clay bowls with beautiful patterns inside. They made slabs by pounding the clay with their hands and then pressed a range of objects into the clay to make indents. Students then cut the clay into circles and placed it into a bowl to shape it.

It has been another wonderful week in the art room. Thanks everyone.

This week in Prep…

Week 2!

Preps have been busy reading this week. They have selected some ‘good fit books’ and a variety of texts, including fiction and nonfiction.

Our sentence of the week was “That ant had a hat”. We also used the sentence starter “I can…” It has been wonderful to see the enjoyment our Preps have shown during writing.

Our visit to Badger Creek Kinder was wonderful. We played outside, did activities inside and even shared a story. This connection to our community is a relationship we look forward to fostering.

Check out our ladybirds that we made when looking at the letter L, see if your child can tell you how many spots are on their ladybird.

REMINDER:

Looking forward to our Mother’s Day afternoon tea next Friday 7th May.

SHOW AND SHARE:

Our Preps have been excited to share with their classmate (some a little nervous). Our small sharing groups are encouraging our Prep’s confidence.

Next week we would like our Preps to bring a favourite photo to share.

PARENT HELPERS:

We have had lots of interested parents wanting to help in the classroom. Thank you!

The best time is between 9-10am each morning. Our current focus will be on reading.

There is now a timetable up in the Prep area on our notice board – please put your name down if you are interested in reading with our Preps.

A maximum of three parents per timeslot will be plenty.  Throughout the year our focus will change and there will be other times that we will need assistance.

Thank you for supporting our learning community.

This week in Grade 1 / 2…

Wow what a wonderful week of learning in the 1/2 area! We have completed our unit of work on measurement in Numeracy. In Writing, we are continuing working on Ideas and we have been using our Writer’s Notebook to collect a range of seed ideas to use in our writing next week. In Reading, we are working on our visualisation skills and having been listening to ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers

This week in Grade 3 / 4…

What an amazing week 2. Great job 3/4.

Across our classes we have been exploring what reciprocal reading groups look like and learning about each of the roles students play. Predictor, Clarifier, Questioner and Summariser.

We have been looking at persuasive pieces in Writing and how best to convince the reader of your perspective. In Maths we have been looking at what patterning is with number looks like, and exploring maps in preparation for our school visit.

We are so proud of all of our kids and their efforts on Athletics Day. What an amazing opportunity to build friendships with other students all the while practising our Athletics skills.

This week in Grade 5 / 6…

Hello to all our wonderful families!

It’s been a hectic week for all the Grade 5/6 students as they focus on improving their understanding of the world around them and their places in it.

We’ve been examining the history of the ANZAC’s from their formation in World War I through to their contribution in more modern times in order to help students better understand and appreciate the bravery and sacrifices of others to provide them with the amazing opportunities we have today. Students created timelines of events and role-played these to their classmates to help provide a greater insight into a sequence of events and the consequences of these. Finally, students focused on the symbols of the ANZACs and created some beautiful posters to highlight the importance of these, which have been proudly displayed in each of their classrooms (as well as a few copies which you’ll see in our newsletter).

In addition to this, students have been studying ANZAC veterans and using the information they’ve discovered to write either historically accurate summaries of their experiences or creative fictional ideas about their perspectives of conflict.

Students have also continued working on their Entrepreneurship Inquiry projects, by brainstorming potential ideas for products to sell, developing business names and practicing consumer marketing, whilst also learning how to prepare financial budgets and make decisions based on price-based data. We’re blown away by the creativity and ideas students have already started developing.

Best Regards
