Nerae Preece Principal

From the Principal

A huge big welcome to all of you. It is so lovely to have all of our wonderful students back at school. We are so excited about the year ahead. The past two days for our team has been spent working extremely hard to make our school a Sanctuary for Learning. On Wednesday we looked at our school vision and learning goals for the year. We looked at our proactive behaviour system (which we tell you about in the next few weeks) and made some time to do a BIG clean-up of our shared spaces. On Thursday we did look at our Instructional Model (that’s the way our lessons work) and a focus around developing our vision for our school in 2030. It was productive and we are certainly glad to have the time to get these important things done.

Welcome to Country

What a special start to our year we had today with our Welcome to Country Ceremony. We must thank Aunty Joy Wandin Murphy for making time to come and help us start our year in this special way.

It is a symbolic way to start the year. As some of you may know, the land of our school sits on Coranderrk, where the first native land title was made in Australia. To acknowledge this history is very important.

A thank you also to Christian Clarke and our families who helped organised the morning tea. It was nice to catch up again.

Dates to remember

Preps will start full days from Monday February 1. Preps will also have Wednesday’s off until Wednesday 24 (this will be the last testing day).

Monday March 15– Labour Day (Public Holiday)

Thursday March 18– 3 way interviews. (Students will finish school at 12:30pm on this day)

Friday March 26– Curriculum Day (Students do not attend school this day)

Thursday April 1– Last day of school

Friday April 2– Good Friday (Public Holiday)

Calm starts

A reminder to all families that students can arrive at school from 8:45am, and make their way straight to the classroom. This is a great chance for your child to come to school and start their day calmly in their classroom through mindful activities like colouring or reading.

We ask that if your child arrives before 8:45, you enrol them into our Out of School Care program to ensure that they are supervised by adults. You will find this program in the room next to the school office (Room 1). If you are looking to enrol your child pop into the office, our team Mel and Brogan will be able to help you out.

New families come and visit the office to learn about Qkr and Sentral

We would like to remind all of our families, but in particular our new families to come into the office to find out more about Qkr and Sentral. If you are a prep parent, you can book in a time at the office on Wednesday’s, testing days.

For all of our families, over the holidays I was able to access the new Sentral App for parents. I am really happy to say that it is very easy to use and well worth downloading.

Well that’s about it for this week. Till next week, have a terrific weekend and we will see you on Monday!

Cheers

Information for parents and carers

During the ordinary course of your child’s attendance at our school, school staff will collect your child’s personal and health information when necessary to educate your child, or to support your child’s social and emotional wellbeing or health in the school context. Such information will also be collected when required to fulfil a legal obligation, including duty of care, anti-discrimination law and occupational health and safety law. If that information is not collected, the school may be unable to provide optimal education or support to your child, or fulfil those legal obligations.

For example, health information may be collected through the school nurse, primary welfare officer or wellbeing staff member. If your child is referred to a specific health service at school, such as a Student Support Services officer, the required consent will be obtained. Our school also collects information provided by parents and carers through the School Entrance Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) and the Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) Transition Form.

Our school may use online tools, such as apps and other software, to effectively collect and manage information about your child for teaching and learning purposes, parent communication and engagement; student administration; and school management purposes. When our school uses these online tools, we take steps to ensure that your child’s information is secure. If you have any concerns about the use of these online tools, please contact us.

School staff will only share your child’s personal or health information with other staff who need to know to enable the school to educate or support your child, or fulfil a legal obligation.

When our students transfer to another Victorian government school, personal and health information about that student will be transferred to that next school. Transferring this information is in the best interests of our students and assists that next school to provide optimal education and support to students.

In some limited circumstances, information may be disclosed outside of the school (and outside of the Department of Education and Training). The school will seek your consent for such disclosures unless the disclosure is allowed or mandated by law.

Our school values the privacy of every person. When collecting and managing personal and health information, all school staff must comply with Victorian privacy law. For more information about privacy including about how to access personal and health information held by the school about you or your child, see our school’s privacy policy: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/schoolsprivacypolicy.aspx
