From the Principal’s Seat

This week has been such a terrific week, and I think the thing that has made me smile the most is the student in grades 5/6 opening up their Cardboard Arcade. I have been walking in and out of their classrooms since they returned from COVID and watched these groups problem solve, compromise, have highs and have frustrations to get to yesterday and today. When I walked in yesterday, I saw big smiles everywhere! It was just beautiful. Entering the arcade was a non-perishable food donation. Want to find out what inspired them? The timeline to the Last Day of School

I wanted to share you some of the things that will be happening next week, so you can be informed as to what is going in the school. Here is the day by day schedule:

Monday- Music moving day. Music is moving to its new home up next to the gym.

Tuesday- Grade 6 graduation

Wednesday- Grade 6 Day Out

Thursday- Final Meet and Greet for the 2021 class and Reports available on Sentral to view

First Day back

In preparation for 2021, we need to save some dates. We have some curriculum days coming up at the start of the year. The Wednesday and Thursday the 27th and 28th of January our staff return to work (It’s pretty unlikely that they are returning, I would say that they would have been at work a number of times over the holidays, knowing their dedication). This means that students start on Friday the 29th of January.
We have organised a very special Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country by a local Wurundjeri Elder. This will start at 9:15am on the 29th of January. We welcome all of our families to attend, and share morning tea afterwards.

Sanctuary Visits

We can visit the Sanctuary again! We are so grateful to our neighbours for making their beautiful space available for our students to enjoy. A number of our classes will be heading over there for their class parties. I also know that we have many wonderful families who are helping out during the week next week to help supervise. A big thank you to all of those helpers!

Edwina for 2 more years!

I received a letter again from the government on Wednesday to let me know that we were successful in gaining funding for our Chaplaincy program. This means Edwina Whiteside is secured for us for another 2 years! I am sure you will agree Edwina is such an important part of our school and offers us support when we need it.

Building project!

Our $9 Million project consultation period is underway. I need to say a huge thank you to the Badger Creek Community Group for helping us get the link out there. Families we have until the 5th of January to get our ideas into the google form. So please spend some time to discuss what our school needs to move into the next part of its journey. Please find the link here

Sports grants

Mr Pitts has done it again! He has scored us a $3200 grant to help get interesting sports into our schools in 2021. Mr Pitts does an amazing job of making sure our kids have a wide range of sports to try and I do know that for many PE is the high light of the week. So thank you Mr Pitts for making Badger Creek a healthier place to be!

That’s about it for this week. Remember to keep watching the virtual school concert through this newsletter, Jen has been uploading performances from our grades.

Have a lovely weekend!

Nerae

MUSIC NEWS

Greetings to our Wonderful School Community,

We have finished off with a great week in music with a bang! Our Prep students recording some of their music for you to share at home. Our preps have done an amazing job this year in music. With our combination of remote learning and playing at school, we have learnt so many things and we can now play together and echo beats and songs. I have included to videos here.

I have been so impressed with all of our student’s commitment and love of music this year. We have had some amazing remote learning participants with some impressive music videos shared.

Our Senior Band members took part in a remote recording, which involved a very different set of skills and was quite challenging to achieve.  They rose to the occasion and did such a great job! I have included it here in case you missed it.

We will be beginning music lessons in week 2 next year with opportunities for your child to learn drums, saxophone, flute J-Sax, recorder, piano, strings, guitar and bass. Please fill in the instrumental music form or contact the office if you would like to make an enquiry.

School Choir will also be resuming next year for students from grade 1 upwards. I can’t wait!

Have a great break,

Merry Christmas,

Jenny Legg: Music Teacher

This week in Art

Hello Badger Creek Community,

The end of the year is almost here and the art room has been buzzing with students finishing off their projects. Our students have shown such commitment and care in creating a high standard of work, which you can see in the gallery below.

Our preps have been working hard to complete their bird sculptures inspired by the book ‘No Two Alike’. They learnt about warm and cool colours, mark-making, texture, line and pattern. Each bird has a personality of its own and showcases  the developing skills of our little artists.

The Grade 1/2 classes have finished their magical mask unit. Looking at masks from the NGV collection, students explored how and why different cultures make and wear masks. Using egg cartons, students created masks with a special character or quality.

During our unit on puppet making, the grade 3/4 classes worked diligently and independently to create their own puppets made from Plaster of Paris. They painted them, as well as sewed and decorated the costumes. This was a long project but the students arrived enthusiastically to every class and had a positive mindset even when tasks were challenging.

Our 5/6 classes have been having a wonderful time finishing off their screen-printed cushions. They have printed pre-made stencils and added fabric, sequins and beads as well as making pompoms and tassels. They look fantastic! Well done team.

Enjoy your week.

Around the Year Levels

IN PREP THIS WEEK

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in Prep!

We began our week writing to Santa to tell him why we each of our Preps would make a great elf! Later, the Preps transformed themselves into an elf! We hope these wonderful creations are decorating your homes as we speak!

Yesterday, we had such fun pretending to be Reindeer’s. We explored the school grounds and then wrote about the things reindeer’s like to do, eat and play. Our Preps are so excited to show their amazing writing skills!!

It is a wonderful time of the year and we continue to look for and support ‘kindness’ in our Preps. Only one week to go!

In Grade 1/2 this week

Students in grades 1/2 worked so hard this term on creating narrative puppet plays. Last week we finally finished off and performed the plays for each other! We learnt about character traits while building and making our puppets. We worked through settings and created beautifully detailed backdrops. Then students used storyboards to plan out the stories and finally wrote the scripts before practising their lines. It was a wonderful project and such a highlight of the entire year. Here are a some snapshots of the hard work.

We hope to have some of these filmed presentations available on the Badger You tube page before the end of term.

Another highlight was visiting the grade 5/6 Cardboard Arcade set up in the gym. The grade 5 and 6 students did a marvellous job making exciting and engaging cardboard arcade games for everyone to enjoy. Not only that but the effort they put into the prizes was outstanding. We are so grateful for the wonderful experience and are so proud of the artistic and engineering abilities we have at Badger. Well done and thank you seniors!!

IN GRADE 3 / 4 THIS WEEK

Our 3/4 students have been extremely focused and supportive towards each other during this busy week. Our Grade 4 students had the wonderful opportunity to spend the day with their future classes for 2021 and to meet their buddies for next year. In Reading, we have been focusing on synthesising and in Writing we have been working on the writing cycle. In Maths, we have been focusing on recalling our number facts by working on doubles and near doubles. We are looking forward to visiting Healesville Sanctuary next Monday for our end of year celebration. One more week to go!

IN GRADE 5/6 THIS WEEK

This week the 5/6 students have been preparing for the cardboard arcade for the whole school. We visited all of the classes during the week to advertise the arcade day and remind students to bring some food to donate to HICCI. The time to show off our games finally came on Thursday and Friday. We had each class come up to the gym to try out our games and they had lots of fun. It was a great success.
