Nerae Preece Acting Principal

From the Principal’s Seat

The first week back for our grades 3-6 students has been met with enthusiasm and excitement. Classrooms have been buzzing, and students have been enjoying a range of activities that focus around learning but also wellbeing. Our wellbeing focus has been around checking in with all of our students and giving them a chance to talk about their experiences over the past few months. One thing these wellbeing activities have shown us is that our kids are incredibly adaptable. Their transition back to school has shown this.

Common Assessment Task

Over the next few days you will have received an email from your classroom teachers sharing feedback around the work your child did for maths last week. We hope these emails provide you with some insight into how your child is travelling in multiplicative thinking (multiplication). We are hoping to continue these Common Assessment Tasks, providing 2 per term to give you more regular feedback on how your child is travelling with their learning. I would like to thank all of our teachers for putting in a terrific amount of effort into assessing and providing the feedback to our students.

Reports

Reports are currently being completed by teachers. The time spent with students has been invaluable, as they can monitor how they have grown as people over the past few months. These reports will be available to download on the Sentral Website on last Thursday of term. If you are still having trouble accessing Sentral, do not hesitate to give Brogan or Mel a ring, they will be more than happy to help you get started.

Drop offs

We would like to gently remind all families to drop your students off from 8:45pm. We are unable to provide the supervision before this time, and will need to place students that do arrive early into Before School Care. This may in turn mean that you will have to incur the costs.

We have been really happy with the gentle starts in the morning. Students are showing great independence in walking into school and getting ready for learning. Our senior school start their day with some quiet music playing and the opportunity to enjoy some independent reading. Whilst our junior school kids enjoy literacy and fine motor activities to help them start their day. Well done to our students for being so proactive in starting their day at school!

Lost property and uniform

There have been a number of students out of uniform, and there is a significant amount of lost property. I am wondering if the two are connected.

We will endeavour to hand out the lost property that is named this week. We also ask that all families check at home to see if their child has accidentally brought home someone else’s clothing. Parents are welcome to come to the office where we store our lost property. It would be great to see all of our students back in uniform really soon.

If your child has grown dramatically over the period we spent in isolation, here is the website for our uniform supplier http://aplusschoolwear.com.au/SearchResult.aspx?Labels=BADGER CREEK

School Council and PFA

School Council will be meeting next week. We meet on WebEx, which has been a great platform for our council to share ideas and help our school. We would also like to support our PFA in returning to their meetings. We hope to create a space to meet on WebEx in the first week back next term. It is such an important way for our families to stay connected. We will provide more details on dates and times very soon. All parents and friends of the school are welcome to join.

That’s about it for this week.

Have a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Principal

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR DROP OFF AND PICK UP

From the School Council President

School Council meets next Wednesday 17 June at 7pm via Webex. If you would like to join to listen in, please let Nerae or I know.

 ———–

I just wanted to give a big shout out to all the Badger Creek staff for all their care and effort over the last few months. As parents we have read the blog, peered over shoulders in Webex classes, had phone calls or emails from staff and had our kids attend the remote learning classes at school. This has been difficult for everyone.

There are two things I particularly wanted to mention. The first is the enthusiasm and energy the staff  have maintained when they have had their most important skills taken away from them – their ability to engage and motivate their students in learning through face to face interaction – the jokes, the smiles, the body language which tells you when to push and when to hold. During this time the teachers stayed positive and pushed on week after week. The strength this takes as individuals and as a team is immense and as parents we would like to thank you.

The second thing I wanted to mention is all the hours of unseen and behind the scene work. Changing the way learning is delivered takes many, many careful decisions, learning new technology, planning and doing things for the first time (which always takes longer).  A five minute video takes hours to produce from an idea, to planning, getting feedback, to set up, many, the many, many takes getting the energy and voice just right to engage students and then navigating various arrangements of devices and apps to get it up on the blog.

Many of our school staff had to make sacrifices for their own families, they had to juggle being a parent (supporting their own children) while working and supporting our children. The staffs’ commitment to our school community and the support that they demonstrated towards each family and student was outstanding and I’m sure we would all like to thank the staff for this.

Lastly I would like to thank Nerae for her leadership during this time. Her effort from the beginning in keeping families informed was very reassuring. In every decision she has made for our school community she held the needs of our community at the centre. All this above and beyond the day to day of keeping the school on track, buildings maintained and cleaned, staff supported and the department requirements fulfilled. Thank you.

So, for keeping the energy up, keeping the focus on caring for our kids, doing your best at supporting their learning, and being there with a welcoming smile as they all returned – thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Around the Year Levels

IN PREP THIS WEEK

The Preps have been reading the book ‘A little bit different’. We are looking at the beginning, middle and end of the story. Check out our illustrations of the Ploofers.

IN GRADE 1 / 2 THIS WEEK

The grade 1/2’s returned to heart maps in writing to record why they love being at BCPS. This was a reflection piece after remote learning. It showed how connected they feel to the BCPS school community.

IN GRADE 3 / 4 THIS WEEK

Reading-Summarising

Writing- Information Reports

Maths-Multiplication

Inquiry-Space Science

Spelling-‘g’ and ‘gg’ sound

IN GRADE 5 / 6 THIS WEEK

In 5/6 maths this week we have been investigating 3D shapes, especially polyhedrons such as tetrahedrons, octahedrons, icosahedrons and dodecahedrons. We have been making the shapes and then using Euler’s Formula to identify the attributes and test our findings.

Exciting times at BCPS!

Turning every situation into a learning opportunity 🙂 Luckily, our burst water main was fixed quickly – even though we liked how our temporary water feature created rainbows in the winter sun!
